Sailing qualifies for ICSA Dinghy Semi-Finals

BRISTOL, R.I.In a successful weekend for the Roger Williams University Sailing team, the Hawks earned a berth to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Coed Dinghy Semi-Finals in Seattle after their performance at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Dinghy Championships.

 

At the NEISA Championships, hosted by Connecticut College, the Hawks picked up one of the eight berths to the ICSA Coed Dinghy Semi-Finals with a fourth-place showing among the 18-team field. Highlighting the Hawks' performance were Sean Bouchard (Bermuda) and Bianca Rom (Amityville, N.Y.), and who guided the B Division to second place overall with top-seven finishes in 12 of the 16 races including three runners-up and two wins. Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.), and Bjarki Gunnarsson (River Vale, N.J.)  piloted the Hawks to ninth place in A Division, finishing eighth or better in half of the races with a pair of wins and runner-up finishes.

 

In the first weekend in May, the Hawks will head out west to Seattle in order to qualify for the ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship in June. RWU will need to secure a place within the top nine in order to qualify for Nationals, which will be held in Wisconsin.

 

At the Oberg Trophy, hosted by Boston University, the Hawks pulled off a fifth-place finish at the regatta. George Saunders (San Diego, Calif.) and Katie Palmer (Warwick, R.I.) combined for a win and five finishes in the top-seven in their seventh-place performance at A Division. Taking fourth place in B Division were Cameron Pimental (Paget, Bermuda) and Dan Goldman (Bradenton, Fla.), on the strength of top-four finishes in six of the eight races on the day. Hosts Boston University clinched the trophy after totaling 60 points.

 

 

At the Gibb Trophy, hosted by Tufts University, Roger Williams took fourth place among the field. Finishing sixth overall were Eric Schwarm (Freeport, Maine) and Haley Powell (St. George, Bermuda) as the Roger Williams B team. The duo finished better than seventh in seven of the 12 races, including a win in the ninth race of the regatta. Taking eighth place overall were Andrew Tamblyn (Little Silver, N.J.) and Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.) for the Roger Williams A squad. The two picked up five finishes in the top-seven, with one runner-up result in the sixth race.

 


At the Brandeis Invite, the Hawks finished sixth in the single-day, five-race regatta. Schwarm and Alex Feldman (West Nyack, N.Y.) ended in fourth in B Division with finishes of 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 7th, and 4th. In A Division were Tamblyn and Megan Carlson (New Providence, N.J.), finishing 5th, 6th, 6th, 5th, and 6th in their five races to take sixth place overall in the Division.


Among the regatta this upcoming weekend, Roger Williams will be hosting the Staake Trophy Team Race on Saturday and Sunday.
