Volleyball advances back to CCC Championship

BRISTOL, R.I. – The top-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team continued their dominant play and swept the #4 seed Western New England 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-14) in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals in the Campus Recreation Center Thursday night.

The Hawks improved to 27-3 on the season and extended their winning streak to program-best 18 straight matches. They have won 21 straight at home.

In the first set, the Hawks jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, before pushing it to a 20-7 advantage. A kill by Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Mass.) would eventually give the Hawks a 25-10 win.

In the second set, both teams traded points back and forth, with Western New England eventually taking an 18-15 lead. After a Hawk timeout, RWU would go on a 10-5 run to close out the set and win 25-23.

The third set began similar to the first, with RWU going up 9-4 early on, before a kill by Natasha Sopchak (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) gave RWU their largest lead of the set (19-7). The Hawks would eventually punch their ticket back to the CCC Championship on a kill by Abby Cunningham (Catasauqua, Pa.).

The Hawks were led by Luczynski, who finished with 11 kills, four blocks, and four digs, while junior Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) added 33 assists in the match to improve to 940 assists on the season. Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.), who was recently named 2011 CCC Player of the Year, had seven kills and seven digs in the contest. CCC Libero of the Year Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) finished with match-high 17 digs.

Senior captain Inna Sergeychik led the Golden Bears with six kills and 11 digs in the loss. Junior Heather Mears (Amherst, Mass.) led WNE with 16 assists, while Kendra Ouimette (Conway, Mass.) added ten digs.

With the win, the Hawks will now play in the CCC Championship against Endicott College, who defeated Salve Regina University 3-0 earlier in the evening, Saturday afternoon at home at 1:00 p.m. The Golden Bears finish at 15-14 on the season.
