BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) had a career high 18 kills as Roger Williams University defeated the Connecticut College Camels 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-19). It is the Hawks first victory over the Camels since a 3-1 result in 2005.
The first set was a back and forth battle with both teams trading points in the early going. A run of three straight points capped by a kill from Amy Newman (Los Angeles, Calif.) would force a Hawks timeout with the Camels taking a 9-7 lead. The Hawks pulled ahead at 17-15, but the Camels would force the tenth tie of the set at 18-18. A three point run by the Hawks would force a Camel timeout at 21-18. The Camels would once again tie the score at 23-23 and 24-24 before the Hawks could take the first set 26-24.
The second set started in a very similar manner with both teams trading points until 6-6. The Hawks would gradually pull away and take the set by a 25-13 score. The Camels were determined to put up a fight and scored the first three points of the third set. However, the Hawks would tie the score at 7-7 then take a 12-7 lead. The Camels battled back to within one point on several occasions but the Hawks would not relinquish the lead as they captured the third set 25-19.
Junior libero Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) led the Hawks stellar defensive effort with 30 digs. While senior Marilu Gonzalez Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior setter Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) would each add 15 digs. Lebowitz dished out 39 assists as well. Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) added 9 kills while Holy Hancock (Tilton, N.H.) had 8 kills for the Hawks.
Junior outside hitter Amy Newman buried 11 kills in the setback for the visitors. Rachel Schroff (Palos Verdes, Calif.) reached double digits with 10 kills. Junior setter Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, Calif.) registered 31 assists in the contest. Senior libero Ally Terlizzi (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 digs for the Camels.
Connecticut College (3-2) will return to New London to host Williams College this Friday night for a 6:00 p.m. match in Luce Field House. Roger Williiams (8-2) will travel to UMASS Dartmouth for another non-conference match at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
