SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team closed out its season this afternoon against Mount Holyoke College, dropping a 7-2 decision to the Lyons.
Sophomore AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa.) and senior Heather Richardson (Holden, Mass.) came out on top at both singles and doubles to set the tone for the Lyons, who closed out their 2011-12 campaign with an overall record of 9-11.
Mount Holyoke swept the doubles matches to gain control in the early going. Konkel and junior Nahrhee Han (Albertson, N.Y.) got things going with an 8-2 win at the number one spot. Richardson and sophomore Kelsey Brower (Tuckerton, N.J.) prevailed 8-6 in the second slot. Meanwhile, senior Sarah Moore (Plano, Texas) and first year Jenni Lee (Albany, Calif.) pulled out a 9-7 victory in the number three contest.
The Lyons finished out the match with four singles points from the bottom of their lineup. First year Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn.), Konkel and sophomore Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan) rolled in straight sets, while Richardson won by default.
Roger Williams (12-7, 6-2 CCC) got on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 victory by junior Tracy Klein (New City, N.Y.) in the number one spot. The Hawks also received a point from sophomore Samantha Curran (Cumberland, R.I.), who overcome an early deficit to win in a third set super tiebreaker in the second slot.
Prior to the match, Richardson and Moore were honored for their contributions to the program over the past four seasons.
Mount Holyoke (9-11, 3-4 NEWMAC) is perfect in five all-time meetings between the teams.
