PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Roger Williams defeated Rhode Island College, 9-0, in the season-opening match for both clubs at the RIC Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.
Junior Samantha Curran (Cumberland, R.I.) earned a straight set (6-1, 6-1) victory at No. 1 singles and paired with senior Tracy Klein (New City, N.Y.) for an 8-0 shutout win at first doubles.
The Hawks began the day with three wins in doubles action. Freshman Adriana Maconochie (Easton, Conn.) and junior Hillary Dutton (Cheshire, Conn.) also pitched a shutout at No. 2 doubles. RIC sophomore Janice Wang (Branchburg, N.J.) and sophomore Gianna Vallante (Coventry, R.I.) lost a hard fought, 8-5, match to RWU freshman Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) and senior Olivia Hilton (Vernon, Conn.) at No. 3 doubles.
RWU took all six singles matches in straight sets, paced by Schmidt's perfect effort (6-0, 6-0) at No. 3 singles.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at Curry on Saturday, Sept. 1 (noon). Roger Williams is off until Sept. 11 when it hosts Curry (3:30 p.m.).
