Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Playing in its first Homecoming Weekend match on the RWU campus, the Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team came away with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-11) win over Gordon College on Saturday morning.
The match was also the fifth annual Dig Pink Match for the Hawks, with the team collecting donations, selling t-shirts, and conducting a 50/50
raffle throughout the match, with the proceeds benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The Hawks opened the match with three straight points after an RWU attack error. Roger Williams built a 9-3 advantage before going up by a 12-7 score. From there, the Hawks closed out the set on a 13-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.
The second set saw the Hawks jump out to a 6-1 advantage and ultimately taking a 14-4 lead before a Fighting Scot timeout. The break helped stopped the Hawk momentum and give Gordon a chance to come back, as the Fighting Scots responded with an 11-4 run of their own to pull within three (15-18). However the Hawks were able to take the second set after seven of the final nine points of the game to go on top 2-0.
Roger Williams opened the third set with three straight points before Gordon pulled back within one. The Hawks then stretched the lead to seven with a 7-1 run leading to a Gordon timeout. RWU kept the pressure on the Scots, using a 9-5 run to take a commanding 20-9 lead. The Hawks closed out the match with an ace and a Gordon attack error for its sixth conference win of the year.
Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) led the team with a double-double, finishing with 12 kills and ten digs on the day.
Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) added nine blocks, one block solo and two block assists, while
Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.) went for four aces and six digs.
Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) added a match-high 22 assists.
Gordon's Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) and Jessica Burdick (Bewerton, N.Y.) each had five kills in the match. Kranyak also added seven digs and a block assist. Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.) finished with 11 digs.
Roger Williams (27-2, 6-1 CCC) hosts UMass-Boston next Friday in its final home match of the regular season. Gordon (11-15, 0-6 CCC) welcomes Curry Tuesday in its regular season home finale.
