ORLANDO, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team faltered in the team's spring break opener, dropping a 4-5 contest to Illinois Wesleyan University down in Florida Monday afternoon.
The Titans opened doubles play by jumping out to an early 2-1 lead. Nick Kenaga and Brian Sorich notched an 8-2 win over Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn.) and Ryan Swanson (West Newbury, Mass.) at #1, while Aaron Guenther and George Alex defeated Zack Bussiere (Colchester, Vt.) and Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.) 8-6 at #2.
Eric Laboissonniere (Cumberland, R.I.) and Jonah Schwartz (Orange, Conn.) got the Hawks on the board with an 8-3 win over Kevin Piotrowski and Genyl Ruffino at #3.
At singles play, Bussiere and Pacino each picked up 6-2, 6-0 wins at #4 and #6 respectively, with Bussiere defeating Guenther and Pacino winning over Ruffino. Kyle Bull (Pleasantville, N.Y.) took home a 6-2, 6-1 win over Piotrowski at #4.
However, the Titans got the overall win after taking the top three spots in singles. Sorich won 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 over Erikson. At #2 and #3, the Hawks took the first set before dropping the final two. Laboissonniere opened his #2 match with a 7-6 (7-5) win before Kenaga took the last two sets 6-1 and 6-2. At #3, Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn.) began play with a 7-5 win against Alex; however, Alex would defeat Webster by winning the final two sets 6-2 and 6-3.
Roger Williams (0-3) will play St. Scholastica next on Thursday after today's match has been postponed due to rain.
