Women’s Tennis splits in final matches of the year

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University concluded the 2013-14 season with a split against Mount Holyoke College and Smith College, falling 4-5 to Mount Holyoke before defeating Smith 9-0.

Against Mount Holyoke, AnnElizabeth Konkel and Eman Malik led the Lyons in doubles play, winning by an 8-6 margin over RWU's Samantha Curran (Cumberland, R.I.) and Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) in the first flight.

The visiting Hawks got the best of the home team in the final two doubles matches, as Alexandra Brown (Kennett, Mo.) and Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) defeated Sayarath and sophomore Margaux Holloschutz by an 8-6 margin in the second flight, while Emma Limburg (New London, N.H.) and Adriana Maconochie (Easton, Conn.) recorded an 8-4 win over junior Sarah Anischik and first year Alexa Colas in the third.

Down by a 1-2 margin, Holloschutz pulled the Lyons even with a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) victory over RWU's Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) in third flight singles. Malik then made it a 3-2 edge for MHC after she posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over McCarthy in the fifth flight and the only match-up that didn't go to a super tiebreaker.

Anischik battled back for a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Limburg at fours to make it a 4-2 advantage with three matches to go. Despite losses in the first and second flights, sophomore Michelle Cai gave the Lyons the victory with a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) win against Alexandra Bourn (West Boylston, Mass.).

Against Smith, Curran and McCarthy earned an 8-4 win over Kelli Cheung and Isabelle Eyman at #1 doubles. The Hawks would also win at #2 and #3 doubles, with Brown and Schmidt at #2 and Kaiserman and Maconochie at #3 by respective scores of 8-0 and 8-2.

At singles play, Curran took a 6-2, 6-2 decision at the #1 flight, while Schmidt defeated Eyman 6-0, 6-1 at #2. Kaiserman came through with a 6-1, 1-6, 10-6 victory over Seema Samawi at #3, and Limburg won 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 at #4 against Margaret Ann Smith. McCarthy and Brown wrapped things up with respective wins of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0 at #5 and #6 against Jinan Martiuk and Alexandra Steck.

Roger Williams closes out the year with a record of 14-7.
