Volleyball gets split on first day of the Endicott Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team was in action this weekend for an early season four game tournament at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. The Hawks opened up the tournament on Friday with two games, splitting against New York University (NYU) and Bowdoin College.

The opener against NYU was a close 4 set match with the action coming to a climax in the third set.  The first set opened up with RWU trading points with NYU until 5 when the Hawks opened up a three-point lead on some NYU mistakes that was extended to a 12-7 lead after two service aces by junior Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.).  The Hawks never looked back from there taking the first set 25-15.  The second set went much the same way with things tight early on, but this time it was NYU that pulled away on some late set errors by the Hawks.

RWU bounced back in a close third set in which they never once lost the lead.  The Hawks lead fluctuated between two and four throughout most of the set receiving strong play from sophomore Brittney McMullen (Lancaster, Pa.) who recorded 4 kills in the hawks first 12 points.  The action built to a 17-17 tie after a small NYU rally but the Hawks soon regained control after two NYU errors.   Junior Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) and sophomore Kristin Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.) who had the final two kills to close the third set 25-21.

The Hawks continued to build momentum in the fourth set jumping to a 5-0 lead on Boyer's serve.  The hawks closed out the match with a 25-13 win in the fourth set.

The Hawks did not fair as well in the second game of the day against Bowdoin College, but the 3-0 sweep of sets in the box score does not reflect how close the game really was.

The first set was very back and forth with 6 ties and 5 lead changes through the first 14 points of the set.  The teams were deadlocked at 14 when Bowdoin started to make its run breaking open a 20-15 lead and eventually taking the set 25-20.

In the second set Bowdoin jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, which was immediately answered by RWU to tie the game at 3 early on.  After trading a few points, Bowdoin went on a 6-0 run breaking the lead open to 8.  The Hawks were unable to chip away at the Polar Bears early lead dropping the second set 25-14.

Down two sets the Hawks continued to struggle in the beginning of the third set.  RWU kept it relatively close through the first 10 points, but eventually Bowdoin went on another huge run opening up an 8-point lead at 19-11.  After a second time-out the Hawks regained form and began cut into Bowdoin lead.  Trailing 24-16 Flaherty led the charge on her serve bringing the Hawks all the way back to level at 24 all.  In the end the comeback would fall short with Bowdoin closing out the Hawks at 31-29 in an exciting third set.
