This Saturday, the Roger Williams University Club Crew team participated in the Halloween Regatta, hosted by Brandeis. The Hawks competed against Brandeis, Lasell, and Mass Maritime.
Temperatures as the first boats launched were in the upper 30's, but it did warm up to the 40's by race time. The race course was 3700 meters long through a shallow river with some very tight turns. Nonetheless, the team had a great event.
The Men's Varsity 4 took 1
st place with a time of 15:47, a full minute ahead of the second place team. The Men's Novice 4 also took 1
st place with a time of 15:52, a bit over 40 seconds faster than their second place team.
The Women Varsity 4 came in 2
nd place, with a time of 20:19, a mere 11 seconds behind the winning boat. However, it should be noted that at the start of the race the Women's boat lost their skeg (the piece under the boat that keeps it from moving sideways) so all the steering and control had to be accomplished by the coxswain adjusting each rower with every stroke. The Women's Novice 4, rowing together for the first time in over a week, in a borrowed boat with borrowed oars, also did very well coming in with a time of 25:20. The team would like to thank the parents that came out to support the team.
This event marks the end of the fall rowing season. The team has closed down the site at Herreshoff Maritime Museum but have the potential for some really strong performances come Spring.
