Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team remained perfect in the Commonwealth Coast Conference after downing Western New England University 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18) Tuesday evening.
The win for Roger Williams improves the team to 3-0 in the CCC and 8-4 overall, while Western New England drops its first conference match (2-1) and falls to 9-4.
In the opening set, the Hawks held a brief two-point lead before the Golden Bears made a run to eventually go up by six (12-6) after a Hawk attack error. RWU would call a timeout to regroup and rally back with a 9-2 run capped by a block assist from
Kristen Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.) and
Cassandra Minogue (Manorville, N.Y.). Western New England called a timeout to halt the momentum and managed to keep the match within one (19-18). However, the Hawks ended the set with six straight points for a 25-18 win.
The second set saw both teams battle back and forth early on. Western New England was able to slightly pull away with four straight points after being tied at five apiece. RWU would come back to tie the set at 10-10, 12-12, and 13-13 before going ahead on a
Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) kill. From there, the Hawks would not give up the lead, though WNE kept things interesting. The Golden Bears never trailed by more than four over the remainder of the set until a service error on the final point gave RWU the 25-20 win.
In between sets, Commonwealth Coast Conference Commissioner Gregg Kaye presented the CCC Women's All-Sports Trophy to RWU President Donald J. Farish as the Hawks came in first place at the end of the 2015-16 academic year.
In the third set, Western New England jumped out to a 7-2 lead, punctuated by a kill from Carly Skibinski (Milford, N.J.). Similar to the previous two sets, RWU mounted the comeback and eventually knotted the set at ten. Boyer would put RWU up by two with back-to-back kills, allowing RWU to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Hawks would go up by as many as seven en route to the 25-18 win.
Boyer finished with nine kills for RWU, while
Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y) finished with eight kills and three block assists.
Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.) led RWU with 21 digs, while
Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) topped the Hawks with 31 assists.
Skibinski led all players with 12 kills, while Emmaline Chiodini (St. Louis, Mo.) finished with ten kills. Jenna Leuck (Dumont, N.J.) handed out 30 assists to go along with 15 digs.
Roger Williams welcomes seven teams to Bristol this weekend as the team will host the RWU Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Western New England takes on Eastern Connecticut State and Smith this Saturday.
