Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team collected its seventh straight victory Friday evening with a 3-1 win over the University of Massachusetts-Boston in non-conference action.
This marks the Hawks' fourth victory in five attempts against the Beacons. RWU last defeated UMass-Boston in 2015 in a 3-2 thriller.
UMass-Boston grabbed the opening set by a 25-22 score. The Hawks were down by four halfway through the game (12-16) before coming back to tie it with four straight points. The Beacons would eventually regain a 22-20 lead before pulling out the win on a kill by Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, Ohio).
The Hawks would come back with a 25-23 victory to tie things at one apiece. The set was a see-saw battle with 11 ties and seven lead changes. Roger Williams gained the lead late and managed to hold off the Beacon rally thanks to a mishit ball off of a serve to give RWU the win.
Roger Williams grabbed an early lead in the third set en route to the 25-22 win. RWU opened on a 5-1 run before eventually taking a six-point lead (10-4). The Beacons kept things close and was able to tie the game at 20. However, RWU pulled away in the end, taking advantage of UMB miscues on two attack errors and a service error for the clinching point.
The final set was another close battle with ten ties and three lead changes. With the set tied at 20, the Hawks logged for straight points and appeared to be headed for the win, but the Beacons rolled off three straight to pull within one. Yet
Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) capped the RWU victory with a kill.
Quilty and
Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) each finished with 11 kills, with Quilty adding nine blocks (four solo, five assists).
Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had 34 assists, while
Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill.) going for 25 digs.
Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) led the way with 18 kills and 23 digs for UMass-Boston. Alex Gibbs (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas) added seven kills and 12 digs. Maslach finished with 26 assists and eight digs.
Roger Williams (14-6) will be back in action tomorrow in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match against Gordon College. UMass-Boston (8-12) will also play tomorrow in a tri-match against Clark and Johnson & Wales.
