BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team had a busy weekend on the water, hosting two conference championships and a women's invitational, in addition to competing at an interconference regatta.
The Hawks hosted the NEISA Men's Singlehanded Championship, with 27 competitors taking part in the championship. Roger Williams had five sailors take part, including
Martim Anderson (Lisbon, Portugal),
Peter Neal (Manhattan Beach, Calif.),
Daniel Petrovic (Tortola, BVI),
Preston Duclos (Wesport, Mass.), and
Paul de Souza (Nassau, Bahamas). Anderson had the top finish for RWU, earning sixth place overall. He posted three fifth-place results while finishing in the top ten in seven of the ten races. Neal took ninth place overall, logging five top-ten finishes with a best of fourth. Petrovic earned 14
th place with three top seven results, while Duclos finished 18
th with three top-ten races. Rounding out RWU's performance was de Souza, who claimed 20
th place with a best finish of tenth in the opening race.
At the 35
th Hood Trophy, hosted by Tufts, Roger Williams University sailed to a runner-up finish.
Mackenzie Bryan (Christiansted, USVI),
Jennifer Agell (Huntington, N.Y.), and
Dane Pedersen (Chanhassen, Minn.) posted a three-point win at A Division, capturing wins at two races while finishing fifth or better in all five races.
Conner Harding (Naples, Fla.) and
Michael McBrien (East Patchogue, N.Y.) earned fourth place at B Division, winning the opening race as part of their three top-eight finishes.
At the Amanda Trophy at RWU, the Hawks took seventh place overall. Leading the way for Roger Williams at A Division was
Janel DeCurtis (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and
Ariana Smaldone (Tiverton, R.I.), who finished in seventh place. They managed to place eighth or better in four races including a win in the final race. At B Division,
Rebecca Anderson (Northport, N.Y.),
Megan Roach (Newport Beach, Calif.), and
Kylie Freitas (Escondido, Calif.) also grabbed seventh place. They claimed sixth or better in four races with a best of third.
