BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team secured strong finishes at four races this weekend, including a first-place finish at the Mystic Lake Team Race. The Hawks finished in second at the Southern 5 on Saturday, third at the Yale Women's Race, and fourth at the NEISA Open Team Race Championship.
At the Mystic Lake, the Hawks posted a 13-1 record with skippers Connor McHugh (Annandale, N.J.), Jack Roman (Newport Beach, Calif.), Bo Angus (Richmond, Va.), and Jonathon Reece Schwartz (Miami, Fla.). The crews were Maddy Martin (Indianapolis, Ind.), Sophie Litos (Dartmouth, Mass.), Dominik Moncur (Plymouth. Minn.).
Roger Williams went 7-0 in the opening round and 6-1 in the second rounds, only falling to Tufts.
At the Southern 5 on Saturday at URI, the Hawks took second after compiling 82 points with 39 coming in Division A and 43 coming in Division B. The duo of Gavin Morris (Annapolis, Md.) and Demetry Spinola (Dartmouth, Mass.) finished in first three times and finished second three times in Division A. Carl Furhoff (Borensberg, Sweden) and Emily Gaillard (Antigua and Barbuda) secured three first place finishes and three second place finishes in Division B.
The Hawks sent skippers Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.), and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) to the Yale Women's Race. The crews for RWU were Maggie Fleming (San Diego, Calif.), Lexi Chigas (Glenview, Ill.), Mackenzie Speece (Shelter Island, N.Y.), and Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands).
Roger Williams went 6-2 at Yale, going 3-1 in the first round and dropping to Harvard. The Hawks went 3-1 in the second round, only dropping to Brown to take third place.
At the NEISA Open Team Race Championship, RWU went 13-8 to take fourth place. The Hawks sent skippers Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain), Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.), Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.), and Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.) and crews Addy Fisher (Charleston, S.C.), Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.), Jakub Fuja (Glenview, Ill.), Matthews, and Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.).
RWU went 9-2 in the opening round, dropping to Harvard and Dartmouth. In round two, the Hawks went 3-4, falling to Brown, Tufts, URI, and Dartmouth. In the final four, the Hawks went 1-2 and lost to Harvard and Brown, but defeated Dartmouth.
Roger Williams will be back in action April 11-12 at the Priddy Fleet Race and the Women's New England Team Race (Legler Trophy).
