Men’s Swimming & Diving Re-Writes Record Books On Way To GNAC Championship

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Eight program records and 18 meet records were shattered by the Roger Williams University Men's Swimming & Diving team on their way to a win at the GNAC Championships over the weekend at the Boston Sports Institute. Competing as an associate member, the Hawks had little trouble beating the competition as they took the top spot in 19 of the 20 races swam over the course of the three-day event.

Roger Williams finished with a team score 521 to take the top spot, they were followed by Norwich University with 410 and the University of Saint Joseph with 158.

The Hawks nearly rewrote the entire program record book over the weekend and the primary suspects were Bodie Ibrahim (Sunnyside, N.Y.) and Riley Williams (Arvada, Colo.) who broke two individual program-best marks each. Ibrahim set the record in the 200-Yard Freestyle and the 100-Yard Butterfly while Williams did so in the 200 and 400 Individual Medley. Both of them were also a part of the record-setting 800-Yard Freestyle Relay team along with Kirk Schultz (Cos Cob, Conn.) and Seth Sutton (Dunfries, Va.). Schultz and Sutton also broke program records on their own, Schultz in the 1000-Yard Freestyle and Sutton in the 50-Yard Butterfly events. Finally, Ibrahim also was a member of the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team that set a program-best time along with Ryan Duryea (Sag Harbor, N.Y.), Vince Tarolli (Syracuse, N.Y.), and Blake Anderson (Seekonk, Mass.)

Ten different RWU swimmers had at least one first place finish over the weekend. Ibrahim and Williams had three each, Ibrahim in the 100 Free and Williams in the 100-Yard Breaststroke in addition to their record-setting events. Schultz had two wins on the weekend as he won the 500-Yard Freestyle in addition to the 1000 that he set the record in. He was matched by Andy Paul (Sunderland, Mass.) who took the top spot in the 50-Yard and 200-Yard Breaststroke.

Also picking up wins were Sutton in the aforementioned 50-Yard Butterfly, in addition to Anderson in the 50-Yard Freestyle, Matt DelGrego (Rochester, N.Y.) in the 100-Yard Backstroke, Evan Fuller (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the 200-Yard Backstroke, Jeff Lyman (North Providence, R.I.) in the 50-Yard Backstroke, and Dalton Sousa (Carver, Mass.) in the 200-Yard Butterfly. Rounding out the RWU wins is Ibrahim, Lyman, Sutton, and Williams in the 400 Medley Relay.

Roger Williams swept the podium in seven different races, the 50, 100, and 200 Freestyle, 50, 100, and 200 Back, and the 100 Fly.
