Wrestling: Welch ’16 and Egan ’05 Named to NEWA Hall of Fame

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team saw former wrestler David Welch '16 and current Head Coach Jon Egan '05 be selected to the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Hall of Fame.

A two-time All-American Welch was a three-time NCAA qualifier for RWU, where he became the 197-pound National Champion as a Senior, posting a 43-2 record during his senior campaign. As a Sophomore, Welch also finished seventh at 184 pounds, while finishing his career with a career record of 151-14. He eclipsed the 100-win barrier as a Junior.

Egan '05 is the current Head Coach of the RWU Wrestling team and holds a career coaching record of 221-58, while posting a 54-19 record in NEWA Duals. Egan finished his career with 121 total victories and was a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American as well as a four-time All-New England selection.

In 2005, Egan was named the RWU Male Athlete of the Year and at the time of graduation was ranked third in school history in all-time wins (121-38).

"Being inducted into the NEWA Hall of Fame is truly an honor. It is something that I need to thank so many people for. My parents, brother, coaches, teammates, and trainers. Even further, to be inducted alongside an RWU National Champion in David Welch is such a cool experience for us both. There is no one else I'd rather be standing next to," spoke Egan.

The NEWA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place at the NEWA Dual Championships hosted on Sunday, Jan. 25, by Johnson & Wales.
