WENHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team suffered their first loss of the season, 5-2, at the hands of Conference of New England (CNE) foe Gordon on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles action, the order of finish was numerical, as Gordon's Lucille Belval and Makayla Otey earned a 6-1 win over Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Meghan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.). Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) then tallied a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot to level doubles, ahead of Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) and Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.), earning a crucial 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to take the point.
In singles, Serena Ross earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, ahead of Palmieri, putting the Hawks back on top 6-2, 6-1 to take a 2-1 lead. The Fighting Scots rebounded with a win at No. 6 singles as Gianna Hallam tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win over Petroniro at No. 6 singles, leveling the score again.
At No. 2 singles Chloe Hanley earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Pecora at No. 2 singles, ahead of Otey who earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Bache to seal the win. Lucy Belval earned a three-set win over Abarca at the No.1 singles spot to seal the win.
Roger Williams (12-1, 7-1 CNE) will travel to face Nichols on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 4:00 pm and host Suffolk on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 12:00 pm to round out the regular season.
