NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team took the top spot in the Open Atlantic Coast Championships, Round 1A, over the weekend, while competing at the Stu Nelson and Sister Ester Trophies.
At the Open ACCs, RWU sailed to a combined two-division total of 68 points in the 18-team field, sailing to the win by 12 points. The Hawks saw 30 points come from Division A, while adding 38 points in Division B.
Division A saw Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain) and Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.) tally 30 total points, finishing second, with Owen Bannasch and Ella Wisely earning 23 points for Jacksonville, as they took the top spot. Dartmouth sailed to third with 39 total points.
The duo sailed to three finishes within the top three, while also earning another pair of finishes inside the top five. After opening with a fourth-place finish, the Hawks sailed to second in race two before dropping to eighth in race three. The Hawks recovered with a third, second, and fifth-place finish. The Hawks rounded out the division with a sixth place finish in race seven.
Division B was sailed by Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) and Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.), who placed second within the division with 38 points. Reade Decker and Abby Baird of Stanford took the top spot with 29 total points. The Hawks duo edged out Penn by two points.
Roger Williams saw Pfrang and Sheehan sail to second in their opening race, ahead of a ninth-place finish in their second. A pair of fifth-place finishes in races three and four built to a top finish in race five, as the Hawks sat with 22 points total. After dropping to 12th in race six, the Hawks recovered for a fourth-place finish.
At the Stu Nelson hosted by Connecticut College, the Hawks placed fourth with 144 total points across three divisions in the 17-team field.
Division A saw Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) sail to earn 50 points across seven races, with three top-three finishes, two of which were in the second and fourth races of the division.
In Division B, Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) and Sophie Litos (Dartmouth, Mass.) had 22 points, tied for the top spot with Harvard, while the Crimson took the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Hawks had five races in the division finish in the top five, while earning a top finish in race seven.
Division C saw Katie McGagh (League City, Texas) and Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) finish with 72 total points, placing 12th in the division. The Hawks opened with a 13th and 10th place finish, with a ninth and fourth place finish on races three and four. The Hawks then finished eighth, 15th, and 13th to round out the regatta.
Rounding out the weekend, the Hawks competed at the Sister Esther Trophy, finishing third and fifth with their two boats in the regatta.
In Division A, the Hawks 2 boat of Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Frankie Sparrow (Portland, Maine) finished with 20 points, placing fourth, while Connor McHugh and Maggie Fleming (San Diego, Calif.) finished with 21 total points for fifth.
Bo Angus (Richmond, Va.) and Jancy Grayson (Falmouth, Mass.) added 16 points in the Hawks 2 boat, finishing with 36 points across the two divisions, placing second in Division B. Hawks 1 saw Jonathon Reece Schwartz (Miami, Fla.) and Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Somers, Mont.).
