Sailing: McHugh Places Fourth at Monotype Trophy to Highlight Hawks Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team saw Connor McHugh (Annandale, N.J.) finish fourth overall at the Monotype Trophy for the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Open Singlehanded Championship over the weekend.

McHugh compiled 73 points on the regatta, finishing two points outside of a top-three finish of Brown's Guthrie Braun, who tallied 71. McHugh finished with three second-place finishes in 11 races, while posting six total top-five placements.

The Hawks had five sailors compete in the regatta, with Jonathan Reece Schwartz (Miami, Fla.), Norman Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas), and Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) finishing 11th (132 points), 12th (133 points), and 13th (139 points), respectively. Hayden McCready (Kingwood, Texas) finished with 199 total points, finishing in 18th out of a competitive 31-sailor field.

At the Hatch Brown Trophy at MIT, the Hawks saw another fourth-place finish over the weekend, as they compiled 57 points, finishing eight behind Yale for third. Each division sailed three races, with Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain) and Addy Fisher (Charleston, S.C.) finishing fifth in Division A with 18 points. Division B saw Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) and Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.) finish seventh, with 24 points, while the team of Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) earned a tie for second with 15 points, falling in the tiebreaker to finish third.

At the Mystic Lake Invite at Tufts, the Hawks had four boats, finishing fourth through seventh in the regatta. Bo Angus (Richmond, Va.) and Jancy Grayson (Falmouth, Mass.) earned 22 points to take the top spot for the Hawks after a pair of second-place finishes. Parker Moore (Hampton, Va.) and Peter Cotoia (South Yarmouth, Mass.) combined for 24 points, placing fifth, while Edward Herman (Annapois, Md.) and Maddy Martin (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied 29 points, placing sixth. The squad of Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.) and Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Somers, Mont.) had 30 total points as they finished seventh.

The final regatta of the weekend saw the Hawks earn fourth at the Regis Trophy at Boston University. The Hawks finished sixth in Division A, tallying 32 points as Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) earned a top-three finish in their fourth race. Division B saw Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) and Sophia Litos (Dartmouth, Mass.) finish with 18 total points after opening with a top finish in their first race, with three third-place finishes.

Roger Williams will compete at the NEISA Match Race Championship on Saturday, Sept. 20 to highlight the weekend.
