Sailing: RWU Finishes Third at NEISA Match Race Championship

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team placed third at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Match Race Championship. Harvard came away with the championship, with Brown finishing second.

On Saturday, the Hawks went 6-1 in round-robin sailing, with the lone loss coming to Harvard, which also went unbeaten in round-robin sailing. In their quarterfinal on Sunday, the Hawks took both races against Bowdoin, before dropping in the semifinals to Brown. In the third-place race, the Hawks earned a 2-1 victory over Boston College.

The Hawks team for the weekend consisted of Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain), Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.), Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.), and Addy Fisher (Charleston, S.C.).

At the Sherman Hoyt Trophy, the Hawks saw their top boat finish second, with their second team finishing 11th overall. In Division A, the Hawks' top boat placed sixth, winning a tiebreaker over MIT, with Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) and Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.) tallying 53 points, earning four top-three finishes. The Hawks' second boat of Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.), who tallied 71 points, finishing ninth in the division.

The Division B boat of Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) earned 21 total points as they took the top spot in the division. The second RWU boat of Connor McHugh (Annadale, N.J.) and Maggie Fleming (San Diego, Calif.) finished 12th overall with 69 points.

The Hood Trophy at Tufts saw the Hawks tally 46 total points to place third, with Tufts' top boat earning first with 22 points. In Division A, Jonathon Reece Schwartz (Miami, Fla.) and Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Somers, Mont.) earned 36 points over four races, finishing ninth in the Division. In Division B, the Hawks saw Bo Angus (Richmond, Va.) and Jancy Grayson (Falmouth, Mass.) earn 10 points, finishing within the top four in each race.

At the 27th Mrs. Hurst Bowl hosted by Dartmouth, the Hawks placed 11th overall, tallying 162 points overall. The Hawks placed 15th in Division A, with Katie McGagh (League City, Texas) and Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) earning 122 points. Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) and Sophia Litos (Dartmouth, Mass.) finished with 40 points in Division B, taking the top spot.

RWU also sailed in the Eagle Invite, finishing first with 214 total points. The Hawks Division A boat scored 56 points to lead the way as Jack Roman (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Frankie Sparrow (Portland, Maine) earned the top spot. Dominik Moncur (Plymouth, Minn.) and Didier Schouten (Eze, France) earned 71 points in Division B, while Parker Moore (Hampton, Va.) and Peter Cotoia (South Yarmouth, Maine) closed out Division C with 87 points.

The Hawks placed fourth and sixth overall at the Salt Pond Invitational on Saturday, earning 53 points in the top boat, ahead of 60 points by the second boat. In Division A, the Hawks' second boat of Max Hanson (Seattle, Wash.) and Jack Gondoly (Bethel, Conn.) tallied 15 points to take the top spot, with Hayden McCready (Kingwood, Texas) and Brielle Santala (Wyckoff, N.J.) earning 36 points, making a three-way tie for sixth.

Division B, saw Sophia Fuller (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Lexi Chigas (Glenview, Ill.) earn 17 points finishing third overall, for the top boat, while Carl Furhoff (Npremsnerg, Sweden) and Richard Marquis (Norwalk, Conn.) gathered 45 total points on the race.

On Sunday, the Hawks saw three boats compete, with the No. 3 boat finishing first overall, followed by the top boat for the Hawks in second. The Hawks' second boat finished fifth with 36 points. Division A, saw Edward Herman (Annapois, Md.) and Mackenzie Speece (Shelter Island, N.Y.) earn 11 points for the Hawks' 3 boat, while Jakub Fuja (Glenview, Ill.) and Dominique Spinola (Dartmouth, Mass.) earned 16 points in third. The second boat of Gavin Morris (Annapolis, Md.) and Maddy Martin (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned 17 points to place fourth in the division.

Division B saw Ludwik Grzelak (Warsaw, Poland) and Panni Missura (Budapest, Hungary) finish in the top spot for the Hawks' 3 boat, while Dominique Spinola and Demetry Spinola (Dartmouth, Mass.) had 12 points finishing second. The Hawks saw Emily Gaillard (Antigua and Barbuda) and Schouten earn 19 points, placing fifth.
