Sailing: Roger Williams Places 10th at Women’s ACC, Takes Top Spot at Moody Trophy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team took part in five regattas over the weekend, highlighted by the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship at Navy.

The Hawks finished 10th overall in the field of 18 teams in Round 1B, finishing two points behind Coast Guard for ninth with 174 points. Stanford took the top spot with 61 points, while Cornell and Brown finished second and third, with 96 and 97 points, respectively.

The Hawks saw Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) earn 10th in Division A, compiling 86 points, and outlasting Coast Guard in a tiebreaker. The duo had a pair of finishes in the top three, while posting four finishes within the top half of the field through nine races.

Division B, saw Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) and Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) with 88 points, earning a 10th-place finish. After opening with a sixth-place finish, the team finished in the bottom of the field over the next four races, before rebounding to finish in the top half of the field over the final four races.

At the Moody Trophy, the Hawks took the top spot with 76 points over the two Divisions, while St. Mary's (Md.) finished in second with 98 total points. Division A saw Bo Angus (Richmond, Va.) and Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) earn 46 points, finishing fourth in the division, with Northeastern taking the top spot in the division with 28 points. Angus and Sheehan sailed to three top-two finishes, including a win in race seven.

Connor McHugh (Annandale, N.J.) and Maggie Fleming (San Diego, Calif.) finished with 30 points, while St. Mary's (Md.) compiled 41 for their second-place finish in Division B. McHugh and Fleming sailed to a pair of first-place finishes, while also earning three second-place finishes.

At the Danmark Trophy, the Hawks combined for 232 points to place 10th in the cross-regional regatta. Yale sailed to the top spot with 134 total points, while Charleston earned 149 points.

Division A saw Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.) and Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Somers, Mont.) earn 104 points, while Yale's Morgan Pinckney and Annabel Woodworth tallied 63. Finishing in 13th in Division B, Jack Roman (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Jancy Grayson (Falmouth, Mass.) were able to collect 128 points, while earning a top-three finish.

The George Warren Smith Trophy saw two RWU boats compete, with the top boat earning 55 points for a third-place finish, while the second boat placed fourth with 83 points. Division A saw Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Frankie Sparrow (Portland, Maine) tie for second, with 33 points, ultimately falling in the tiebreaker. Jonathon Reece Schwartz (Miami, Fla.) and Sophia Litos (Dartmouth, Mass.) finished fourth with 37 total points.

Division B saw Parker Moore (Hampton, Va.) and Peter Cotoia (South Yarmouth, Mass.) sail the top boat to second, compiling 22 total points, while Dominik Moncur (Plymouth, Minn.) and Didier Schouten (Eze, France) earned 46 points, finishing sixth, while helping guide the Hawks' second boat to a fourth-place finish.

Rounding out the weekend, the Hawks also competed at the BU Invite, seeing third, fourth, and eighth place finishes. In Division A, the RWU top boat of Jakub Fuja and Dominique Spinola (Dartmouth, Mass.) tied with Ludwik Grzelak (Warsaw, Poland) and Panni Missura (Budapest, Hungary) with both teams earning 12 points; the tiebreak went to Fuja and Spinola for second place. Hayden McCready (Kingwood, Texas) and Maddy Martin (Indianapolis, Ind.) compiled 20 points to round out the Division in seventh.

Gavin Morris (Annapolis, Md.) and Sophia Fuller (St. Petersburg, Fla.) earned 14 points as RWU's top boat finished 14th overall. Emily Gaillard (Antigua and Barbuda) and Mackenzie Speece (Shelter Island, N.Y.) finished with 18 total points, while Max Hanson (Seattle, Wash.) and Demetry Spinola (Dartmouth, Mass.) placed eighth in the Division with 25 total points.
