BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team opened the 2025-26 season over the weekend, placing first at the Toni Duetsch '58 Trophy hosted by MIT. The Hawks also secured wins at the Mt. Hope Bay Invite while securing two other top-five finishes.
At the Toni Duetsch Trophy, the Hawks secured the top spot with 125 total points, finishing with nine fewer points than second-place Dartmouth. In Division A, the combination of Lucy Meagher and Maren Matthews finished second with 63 points, after compiling three top finishes and 10 finishes within the top five. They combined with the Division B squad of Tavia Smith and Jancy Grayson, who added 62 points, finishing third in the division, earning five top finishes. The Hawks' second boat with Katy McGagh and Elyssa Franklin finishing 10th in Division A, while Emily Gaillard and Mackenzie Speece placed 14th in Division B.
At the Mt. Hope Bay Invite, the Hawks took the top three positions as Edward Herman and Max Hanson finished with 33 total points in the regatta, Jakub Fuja and Jack Gondoly added a second-place finish, finishing three points off the pace with 36 total, while Dominik Moncur and Didier Schouten finished the regatta in third with 55 total points.
At the Pine Trophy, the Hawks finished second overall, as they compiled 43 points with Brown taking the top spot with 38. In the lone division, Carlos Bermudez de Castro, Addyson Fisher, Drew Mastovsky, and Tristan McDonald combined to sail. The Hawks took the top spot in a pair of races, while finishing fifth or lower once.
At the Bears Invite hosted by Brown, the Hawks placed four boats inside the top 10 in the one-division regatta, highlighted by a fourth-place finish from the duo of Connor McHugh and Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino with 33 points. Jack Roman and Maggie Fleming followed closely behind in fifth with 38 points, while Bo Angus and Sophia Litos secured seventh with 40. Rounding out RWU's top performers, Reece Schwartz and Frankie Sparrow claimed eighth with 46 points.
At the Harry Anderson Trophy, the Hawks sailed to a sixth-place finish, one point behind Dartmouth for fifth with 82 points. Kyle Pfrang and Jed Lory earned 29 points in the division while finishing with a pair of second-place finishes. The duo combined for five top-four finishes in their six races. Oliver Stokke and Carter Sheehan finished division B with 53 points, placing ninth. The two earned a first-place finish in their fourth race.
Roger Williams will return to the water on Saturday, Sept. 13 for the NEISA Singlehanded Championships at Brown.
