REHOBOTH, Mass. – Lily Scarth (East Setauket, N.Y.) qualified for the Region 1 Finals and Annika Ormsby (Devens, Mass.) earned a first-place finish as the Roger Williams University equestrian team opened its season Saturday at Bluemead Stables, co-hosting the competition with Salve Regina.
The Hawks tied Rhode Island College for fifth with 15 points. Salve Regina captured high point team honors with 40 points, followed by Brown with 32. Johnson & Wales finished third with 31 points, while Rhode Island placed fourth with 26. Holy Cross rounded out the standings with 14 points.
Scarth placed fourth in intermediate equitation on the flat, securing her spot at the Region 1 Finals in March. She will move up to the open flat division for the Hawks' next competition.
Ormsby led Roger Williams with a victory in Section A of limit equitation on the flat, finishing atop a six-rider field. She also placed third among eight riders in Section A of limit equitation over fences.
Breanna Frechette (Avon, Conn.) added a runner-up finish in Section B of limit equitation over fences, competing in a seven-rider field. She followed with a fourth-place finish in Section B of limit equitation on the flat. Ormsby's first-place finish and Frechette's second-place showing accounted for more than half of the Hawks' team points.
Lindsey Savoie (Tolland, Conn.) also competed in intermediate equitation over fences, while Raine Dabrush (Framingham, Mass.) and Lani Schilling (Wellesley, Mass.) represented Roger Williams in novice equitation on the flat.
"I am pleased with the direction each rider on the team is demonstrating in both practice and our first competition," head coach Dirk Fogg said. "We have two weeks to strengthen our focus for the competition ring."
Roger Williams returns to competition Saturday, Oct. 24, at Brown's show at Windswept Farm in Warren, R.I. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
