Women's lacrosse falls, 7-4, to Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) recorded a hat-trick in her collegiate debut to lead the Connecticut College Camels (1-1) to a 7-4 victory against Roger Williams University (0-1) in a non-conference clash between the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC)  that was played in New London Wednesday.

Driscoll netted a pair of scores 2:19 apart from each other at a critical juncture in the second half that extended what was just a two goal advantage to a more comfortable four-goal cushion.

Sara Christopher (Andover, Mass.), Hope Barone (North Kingstown, R.I.), Paige Pascarelli (Wayne, Pa.) and Abby Hill (Stoneham, Mass.) chipped in with goals for the hosts.

Sophomore Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) contributed two goals and an assist for the Hawks. Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) and Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.) chipped in with goals for Roger Williams University.

Halliday buried a free position shot just 1:05 into regulation to provide the Hawks with an early 1-0 lead. But the Camels scored the next four goals in the half. Christopher supplied the equalizer with 11:18 remaining. Barone and Driscoll tallied free position goals 44 seconds apart to put the Camels on top 3-1.  Abby Hill closed out the scoring with 2:33 to go, making a nifty move in front of the cage for her fifth score in the past two games and the Camels enjoyed a 4-1 lead at the break.

Halliday opened the second half the same way the first one commenced, rifling home a free position with 23:07 remaining in regulation and the Hawks were within striking distance in a 4-2 contest. But Driscoll answered for the Camels 39 seconds later with her second score of the contest. Later on with 20:19 to play, Driscoll completed the hat-trick with a hustle play. Junior Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) made a point-blank save on Driscoll's initial scoring bid. But Driscoll was able to collect her own rebound and find the back of the net for the goal.  Magee finished with 11 saves in an admirable performance between the pipes.

Paige Pascarelli extended the lead to five goals with 10:29 remaining. The senior tri-captain corralled a ground ball in the defensive end and stepped on the accelerator, cruising from one end of the turf to the other for the goal and 85th point of her career.

The Hawks added two more goals to make it a 7-4 contest but the Camels were able to keep the visitors off the board the rest of the way.  Junior Jenna Ross (Longmeadow, Mass.) stopped 11 shots in the victory for the Camels.

Connecticut College will host Amherst College Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. in New London. The Hawks will visit UMass-Dartmouth Thursday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. game in North Dartmouth.
