BRISTOL, R.I.- The RWU Women's Lacrosse team posted a 14-3 halftime lead and endured a strong second half by the visiting Chargers of Colby-Sawyer to earn a 17-11 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory on a cold and rainy Saturday morning.
As the rain continued to fall throughout the game, field conditions worsened and with 4:48 remaining on the clock, the officials deemed the field dangerous and unplayable. The decision ended a strong second-half by Colby-Sawyer, which began with the team scoring six of the half's first seven goals. Junior Elaina Kennedy (Sunderland, Mass.) and freshman Liz Allen (Holden, Mass.) both tallied two goals during that stretch, bringing the Chargers to within six at 15-9.
A cold, but determined Hawks squad responded with two goals, both by sophomore Kelsey Adams (Goffstown, N.H.), at the 11:07 and 10:30 mark. Back-to-back goals by Colby-Sawyer returned the difference to six before the game's conclusion.
The first half was dominated by the Hawks, who were ahead 10-1 just 15:16 into the game. Sophomore Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) posted four points within the first 15 minutes and finished the game with three goals and two assists. Her five-point total tied senior Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.), who recorded two goals and three assists in the game.
The Hawks posted 25 shots in the first half, while Colby-Sawyer tallied nine – a stark difference between the 14-7 advantage Colby-Sawyer held in the second half. Meanwhile, both Alicia Foss (Greensboro, Vt.) for Colby-Sawyer and Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) for Roger Williams posted eight saves in 55:12 between the pipes.
The win improved the Hawks record to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Chargers fall to 2-7 and 1-6. Both teams have scheduled non-conference games for their next action, as Colby-Sawyer hosts Keene State Monday at 3:30 and Roger Williams travels to Bridgewater State College, Tuesday, for a 4 p.m. contest.
