Women's Lacrosse secures second seed in TCCC Playoffs

BRISTOL, R.I.- Gordon senior Danielle Zorn (Mercer Island, Wash.) scored a game-high six goals Saturday, but it was not enough to spoil the Hawks' final regular season game as they went on to win, 12-11.

After an RWU senior day ceremony honoring the tremendous accomplishments of three seniors: Jacki Criss (Westwood, Mass.), Emily Schall (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Libby Stout (Concord, Mass.), the Hawks exploded for the first five goals of the game. But a strong Gordon team battled back, scoring five of the next six goals, entering halftime down just 6-5.

Two quick goals by RWU at 26:17 and 25:36 of the second half and the Hawks looked to be back on track. But Gordon senior Annie Cameron (South Hamilton, Mass.) assisted on two Gordon goals just 16 seconds apart to pull the Fighting Scots back to within one at 23:04. A goal by Criss was answered by back-to-back free position goals by Gordon to tie the game at 9-9 with 17:12 remaining in regulation.

Criss scored her third goal of the game to break the tie before sophomore Claire Halliday scored her third goal of the game to put RWU ahead two. Junior Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.) completed the three-goal spurt at 13:13, scoring the Hawks' final goal of the game and the eventual game-winner.

Zorn scored her third free-position goal of the game at 12:20, but neither team would find the back of the net again until just two minutes remained. Junior Maggie Roth (Saco, Maine) scored her only marker to bring the Fighting Scots to within one. Both teams garnered shots as time ticked down, but both goalkeepers held strong to keep the score 12-11 at the final horn.

Gordan's Chyanne Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y.) finished the game with eight saves in 60 minutes, while RWU junior Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) registered four.

Criss finished the game with three goals and two assists, while Stout posted three goals on four shots. At defense, Schall proved her experience playing well in the tight game causing one turnover and picking up two ground balls.

The win secures a TCCC regular season second-place finish for RWU, boasting a 13-2 record overall and an 8-1 record in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. Gordon falls to 6-7 and 6-3, earning a fourth-place finish. The team will host No. 5 seed New England College in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Hawks will host No. 7 seed University of New England in their quarterfinal contest Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
