BRISTOL, R.I.- For the second-straight season, the RWU Women's Lacrosse team has advanced to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Finals, scheduled for Saturday, May 2. The Hawks advanced with a 13-5 semifinal win over sixth-seeded Curry College Thursday afternoon.
The Curry Colonials tallied more shots than the Hawks by game's end, but RWU goalkeeper Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) proved her nation-best save percentage is well earned as she stopped 10 shots by the Colonials in 60 minutes. Her counterpart, sophomore Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.), registered two saves while allowing 13 goals on 20 shots.
The Hawks controlled the pace of the game early, with junior Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.) scoring two goals before Curry recorded its first shot 10:05 into the game. Sophomore Claire Halliday (Tenton, N.J.) added a third goal at 14:02 and freshman Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) scored on a free position shot before Halliday scored again at 7:47.
Curry junior Ashley Hansbury (Chelmsford, Mass.) snapped the Hawks' scoring streak with the final goal of the half at the 7:07 mark.
RWU maintained its pressure in the second half with senior Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) assisting on the team's next two goals before Beckwith scored her fourth of five goals in the game.
The Colonials scored three of the next four goals to bring the score to 9-4, but RWU responded with four straight to pull away. Curry's Nicole Fratto (Braintree, Mass.) scored the game's final tally for the 13-5 finish.
Criss led RWU with a game-high seven points on six assists and one goal, while Beckwith tallied five goals along with one assist. Curry was led by junior Carissa Lauyer (Bloomsbury, N.Y.) who tallied two goals, while Hansbury finished with one goal and one assist.
Curry finishes its season with an 11-8 overall record. RWU continues with a 15-2 record, playing Saturday against top seed Endicott College, which advanced after an 11-4 win over fifth seed New England College today. Saturday's TCCC Final is a rematch of last year's final, which the Gulls won, 7-6.
