BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU Women's Lacrosse team moved into second place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Saturday with their 11-5 defeat over visiting University of New England. The win improves RWU's TCCC record to 7-1 and 9-3 overall, while UNE falls to 7-2 in the TCCC and 9-3 record overall.
RWU senior Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.), coming off an eight-goal performance Thursday, posted four goals along with junior Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.). The two combined for five of the Hawks' six goals in the first half.
After RWU sophomore Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) scored RWU's second goal at 20:20, UNE teammates Danielle Cate (Boscawen, N.H.) and Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) scored back-to-back goals, evening the score at 2-2 in the early going. Halliday notched her second of the game with an assist from Beckwith at 15:48 before Beckwith tallied three-straight goals to give RWU the 6-2 edge at the break.
Cole scored the second of her three goals on the day just 27 seconds into the second half, but less than a minute later RWU senior Jessie Alden (Bourne, Mass.) scored with the feed from senior Natasha Billie (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.). Halliday extended RWU's lead to five at 20:29 before UNE senior Mallory Long (Lewiston, Maine) and Cole scored 1:18 apart forcing RWU into a timeout with the score 8-5 and 12:33 on the clock.
The break proved effective as RWU held the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the game while tacking on three of its own before the final horn.
UNE junior goalkeeper Tara Geraghty (Barrington, R.I.) playing well in her home state, stopping 13 RWU shots-on-goal in 60 minutes. RWU senior Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) tallied six saves in the win.
RWU held the edge in ground balls, 17-10, and draw controls, 10-8, while both teams were stymied by the opposing goalkeeper on free position shots with RWU going 2-for-10 and UNE finishing 1-for-4.
Prior to the game, RWU's six seniors were honored for their success and dedication to the program: Lauren Cooper (Danbury, Conn.), Natasha Billie (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.), Jessie Alden (Bourne, Mass.), Annie Alvord (Yorktown, N.Y.), Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.) and Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.).
Both teams take a break from TCCC play in their next contests, Monday at 4 p.m., as RWU hosts Emerson College and UNE hosts Bates.
