Hawks drop Anchorwomen, 16-7

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The RWU Hawks Women's Lacrosse team dominated play Monday afternoon in Providence, R.I., defeating the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College, 16-7.  

Rhode Island College freshman Haley Lattinville (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored the game's opening goal on a free position shot at 26:27 before RWU posted a five-goal scoring streak, kicked off by senior Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.). Beckwith went on to score a game-high four goals in the contest.

 

Five different Hawks scored during that 9:17 stretch, but RIC freshman Libby Lazar (Wakefield, R.I.) scored at 11:23 to move the score to 5-2. RWU took over from there. After senior Annie Alvord (Yorktown, N.Y.) scored her lone goal at 9:40, RWU tallied five-straight goals within four minutes for the 11-2 lead.

 

RIC sophomore Nicky Drolet (Somersworth, N.H.) scored with just 22 seconds remaining before haltime for an 11-3 score at the break.

 

After four-straight goals to start the second half, RWU relaxed to allow the hosts four of the game's final five goals, but the lead was insurmountable for the Anchorwomen as they dropped their third game of the season.

 

RWU junior Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) scored two goals and notched three assists in the game and sophomore Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) notched four points on three goals and one assist.

 

Sophomore Molly Voyer (Lincoln, R.I.) led RIC with three goals, while four other Anchorwomen tallied a single goal in the game.

 

The shots were an even 24-24 for the teams, but RWU senior Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) registered 14 saves in 43 minutes of play, while allowing just thee goals against. RIC goalkeeper Kerri Montgomery (Franklin, Mass.) posted five saves in 60 minutes.

 

RWU picked up seven more ground balls, finishing the game with the 21-14 advantage. RIC went 3-for-9 on free position shots, while RWU went 2-for-3.

 

RIC returns to action Thursday, hosting SUNY – Maritime in a 6 p.m. contest. RWU hosts The Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Salve Regina Thursday at 4 p.m.
