BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU Women's Lacrosse team defeated the visiting Colby-Sawyer Chargers, 14-6, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals Saturday on Bayside Field. The Hawks advance into the semifinals Wednesday, when they will host third-seed University of New England at 4 p.m.
Seven-straight goals scored within the span of ten minutes midway through the first half gave RWU the advantage it needed to cruise to its 11th win in 12 games. The Hawks improve to 13-4 this season, while the loss ends Colby-Sawyer's season with a 6-11 record overall.
The scoring streak began at 17:05 for RWU, after the teams traded goals to a 2-2 tie. Senior Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.) scored on a free-position shot at 17:05 before junior Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) contributed on the Hawks' next four goals, registering three markers and an assist on teammate Kate Malenczak's (Sayville, N.Y.) second of three goals. Senior Jessie Alden (Bourne, Mass.) and freshman Dana Wilfahrt (Hamilton, Mass.) scored unassisted goals at 8:38 and 7:21, respectively, giving RWU the 9-2 lead.
Colby-Sawyer sophomore Brittney Murphy (Woburn, Mass.) snapped the scoring streak with back-to-back tallies at 4:30 and 3:37, sending the teams into halftime with the score 9-4.
The Hawks extended their lead in the second half scoring the first four goals for the 13-4 advantage with 9:34 left to play. Chargers junior Hannah Cullen (Penacook, N.H.) scored at 7:41, but RWU sophomore Sarah Tozier (Falmouth, Maine) responded with her third goal of the season at 5:56. A free-position goal by Colby-Sawyer freshman Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) at 4:19 would serve as the game's final tally.
Halliday led RWU with five goals and one assist on the day, while Murphy posted two goals to lead the Chargers. Hawks senior goalkeeper Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) registered six saves in net, while freshman Ekta Sampson (Hyde Park, Vt.) stopped eight shots for Colby-Sawyer.
Wednesday's semifinal contest begins at 4 p.m. against a UNE team which fell to RWU, 11-5, in their most recent meeting, April 17. RWU and UNE also met in last year's postseason, with RWU earning the 21-8 quarterfinal victory. UNE advanced to Wednesday's semifinal with a 14-10 win today over sixth-seeded Gordon College.
