Gordon advances over Women’s Lacrosse in TCCC Quarterfinals

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Gordon College ousted the Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team from The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament with a 23-13 win Saturday afternoon in the Quarterfinal Round.

The win for the Fighting Scots avenges a 15-11 setback to the Hawks earlier in the year and advances them to the TCCC Semifinal Round on Wednesday, where they will face the #1 seed Western New England College. Gordon has already beaten the Golden Bears earlier in the year by an 11-9 score.

Alana Woods (Medford, Mass.) put Gordon on the board with a free position goal 1:15 into the game before Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) took a pass from Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) to tie the game at one apiece. Gordon's Jocie Knaus (Kensington, Conn.) would then spark the Fighting Scots on a 4-0 run to put them on top 6-2 before Kate Malenczak (Sayville, Conn.) notched a free position shot to make it 6-3.

The Hawks would eventually pull within one on a pair of goals by Jessica Searl (Glastonbury, Conn.) and another score by Malenczak to make it 6-5. That would be as close as the Hawks would get over the rest of the game, as Gordon scored four straight to take a 10-5 lead, with Knaus and Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) contributing two goals each over the run.

Halliday would stop the bleeding with her second score of the day with 6:25 to play in the half, but Gordon would close out the period with four straight goals, including a score by Knaus with three seconds left.

Jordan Alexander (Portland, Maine) scored 27 seconds into the second to put Gordon up 15-5. The Hawks would never pull closer than seven over the rest of the game as Gordon rolled to the win.

Danielle Maguire earned the win for Gordon, stopping ten shots in the game. Knaus finished with a team-high seven goals while Alexander added five goals. Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine) chipped in with five points on four goals and an assist.

Justine Sullivan (Norwell, Mass.) took the loss, making seven saves in the game. Halliday finished with six points on five goals and an assist, while Malenczak added three goals. Delia had six points on two goals and four assists.

Halliday ends her career as the only Hawk in lacrosse history, male or female, with 300 career points and 200 career goals, as she wraps up her career with 220 goals and 302 points.

Roger Williams concludes the season with a record of 11-7 overall and 8-3 in the TCCC.
