Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team suffered its first Commonwealth Coast Conference loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 14-16 to the University of New England.

Roger Williams drops its first game in three tries and moves to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the CCC. UNE has now won six straight games and improves to 2-0 in the conference, 8-2 overall.

Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.) began the scoring for Roger Williams with a goal less than two minutes into the game. The Nor'Easters answered with four straight goals over a three-minute stretch to take a 4-1 lead.

Dana Wilfahrt (Hamilton, Mass.) and Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored to bring RWU within one, but Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) and Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) came back with a goal each for UNE to keep the lead at three.

Both teams alternated goals back and forth over the final 11 minutes of the first half, with the Nor'Easters entering the break with a 10-7 lead.

Nikki Smith (Shapleigh, Maine) and Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) opened the second half with goals to bring UNE's lead to five. The Nor'Easters maintained lead of at least three throughout most of the period before a late Hawk rally helped push Roger Williams closer.

Wilfahrt, Rahilly, and Danielle Neagle (Avon, Conn.) each scored with less than six minutes to play to pull RWU to within two. After a pair of UNE goals, Davenport notched two more scores in the final minute to bring the Hawks back to within two. Yet UNE was able to run out the clock and hold on for the win.

Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made six saves in the win for UNE. Tavella finished with four goals in the game, while Newsome had six points on three goals and three assists. Nicolle Steel (Ocean City, N.J.) added three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Justine Sullivan had nine saves for RWU in the loss. Davenport scored a career-high five goals in the game, while Wilfahrt had five points on three goals and two assists. Mackenzie Logan (Sussex, N.J.) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
