Tim McGowan runs to 172nd place at NCAA Championship

MASON, Ohio – Roger Williams University Men's Cross Country freshman Tim McGowan (Northport, N.Y.) made his debut at the NCAA Championship this past Saturday and placed 172nd in his first appearance at nationals.

McGowan faced off against the nation's top runners in Division III and held his own. His time of 25:44.7 was the 16th-fastest time amongst all freshmen in the race.

"I'm proud of Tim's effort today," said Head Coach Sean Livingston. "He got out well off the line, then got pulled down from behind and went down about 300 meters into the race. He had pretty bad cuts on his foot and his shoe nearly came off. It was tough to get it together.

North Central won the team championship, posting an overall score of 130. Grant Wintheiser of St. Olaf earned the individual championship, putting together a time of 23:44.9.

"He battled all the way through, and & Coach Cicchinelli and I are proud of his race and of his season overall. The individuals that qualify for the NCAAs really have to earn it and it's really a different dynamic traveling all this way without the rest of the team. He'll learn from this experience and it'll only help him race better in the future."
