Women's Lacrosse drop season opener to Springfield

Box Score BRISTOLR.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse dropped their season opener 18-5 to the Pride of Springfield College.  Springfield out shot the Hawks 29-14 on their way to victory  and begin the season 1-0 while the Hawks begin the season 0-1.

The Hawks attack was lead by Jessica Searl (Glastonbury, Conn.) with two goals and Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass.) with three assists and a goal. Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn.) pitched in with a goal and an assist along with Kristen Pingree (Georgetown, Mass) for a goal.

Scoring for the game began with a quick dish from Rahilly to Searl for a score at 2:03. With 12:42 left in the half Machette found Rahilly for a shot, closing out the scoring for the Hawks in the first half with 2 goals.

The Pride offense was led by Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass.) with a game high ten goals. Kelly Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) contributed a pair of goals and an assist while Connie Nielsen (Sayville, N.Y.) added 3 goals. A single goal from Heather Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Paige Campbell (Lakeville, Mass.), and Jennifer McDonough (Holbrook, N.Y.) contributed to the final score. Raniolo and Elizabeth Poitras (Somers, Conn.) both chipped in an assist.
Springfield jumped to a lead in the first half outscoring the hawks 11-2. The Pride took advantage of their free positions, scoring on four of the eight-meters in the first half and twice in the second half.

Dorsey started off scoring for Springfield 7:13 minutes into play. Continuing on with their momentum, they added 5 more unanswered goals by 15 minutes in to raise the score 6-1. Dorsey went on a 4-goal streak until Nielsen finished out scoring in the half with an assist from Poitras.

The Hawks came out strong with a goal three minutes in from Pingree off a pass from Rahilly. Rahilly found Searl less than four minutes later for another score. Machette finished off the scoring for the Hawks from a free position with 18:10 left in play.

Springfield scored seven goals in the second half. Dorsey started the Pride off with a goal 3:24 into the half. Less than 30 seconds later Raniolo found cutting McDonough to put one in the back of the net. Unassisted goals and free position shots closed out the remainder of the Pride attack. The last goal being scored with 2:12 left in play by Raniolo left the final score at 18-5.

Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) began her collegiate debut for Roger Williams with 6 saves during the first half. Annie Bartkus (Bedford, Mass.) began her career as well, with 2 saves in goal during the second half of play. For Springfield, Anne Versprille (Franklin, Mass.) had four saves in goal for the win and keeper Carley Elkin added one in relief.

Roger Williams is slated to travel to Wheaton College on Tuesday, March 4th at 4:00 p.m. for their next match-up and Springfield will host Williams on Wednesday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m.
