Womens Lacrosse gets nipped by the Lyons of Wheaton

Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College women's lacrosse sophomore Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt.) registered five goals and three assists – both career highs – and junior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass.) made a game-high ten saves including three stops with under two minutes to play to guide the Lyons past Roger Williams, 11-10, in comeback fashion on Tuesday evening on Nordin Field.

Wheaton senior co-captain Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine) posted a hat-trick, while sophomore Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) added two goals and senior co-captain Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn.) notched one marker.

Kristen Pingree (Georgetown, Mass.) paced Roger Williams' offense with three goals and classmate Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in with two tallies and one assist. Junior Mackenzie Logan (Vernon, N.J.) also contributed a pair of goals along with solo markers from junior Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.), sophomore Lauren Piotrowski (Wakefield, Mass.) and junior Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn.).

Down 9-7 after the Hawks rattled off three-straight markers, Sabol took over offensively with back-to-back goals to draw the Blue and White within one. Sabol sniped home a free position shot at 6:53 and followed up her fourth goal of the night by winning the draw control before putting home an unassisted tally at the 5:51 mark.

Sabol went on to facilitate Wheaton's go-ahead goal as she found Soucier in the slot with a crisp pass from behind the net to give the Lyons a 10-9 lead with 3:30 to play.

Rahilly answered for Roger Williams at the 2:40 mark with her third marker of the year cleaning up a loose ball and ripping a shot into the back of the net to even the score at 10-all.

After a whistle stopped Wheaton's transition game just near the eight-meter arc, freshman Giovanna Bishop (Portland, Ore.) took advantage of the extra space and connected with Mills for the eventual game-winning goal near the right post.

Ananian shouldered the Lyons' defense down the stretch making three saves including a stop on a free position attempt with 42-seconds left on the scoreboard.

Roger Williams held a 17-7 differential in draw controls in large part to Logan who ended up with a game-high 11 draws. Hawks' freshman goalkeeper Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) turned away nine shots in the loss. Wheaton went 13-for-19 in clear attempts, while Roger Williams was 11-for-17 in its transition game. The Lyons also accumulated a slight, 25-24, margin in ground balls in the contest with a team-high four coming from Soucier.

Wheaton (2-0) travels to Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 12 for a non-conference match-up at 1:00 p.m. Roger Williams (0-2) visits MIT on Saturday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m.
