Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team erased a foul goal deficit in the second period to best Bridgewater State in the closing seconds of a non-conference thriller. The Hawks climb to 7-7 overall while Bridgewater State drops to 8-3 on the season.
BSU opened the scoring with a Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) drive from behind that resulted in a point blank shot on goal that put the Bears up early. RWU then answered on a free position attempt by Kristen Pingree (Georgetown, Mass.) the squared the contest.
BSU rebuilt their lead on a goal by Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.), assisted by Clancy. Clancy kept the momentum with the Bears when Clancy followed up her own shot with a rebound and a score that put BSU up 1-3.
Pingree created pressure in the back third and while the goalie was out of the crease checked her stick and picked up the loose ball and beat her to the goal that cut the lead to 2-3. Renauld then converted a foul to a successful free position attempt and pushed the advantage back to two goals 2-4.
Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass.) found a cutting McKenna Everding (Fayettevile, N.Y.) which brought RWU back within one at 3-4.
Clancy continued to apply pressure on the Hawk's defense finding space on isolation plays resulting in two more BSU goals which put the contest at 3-6.
Renauld and Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) ran a pick and roll play which resulted in a RWU foul. Geary then finished on a free position to give the Bears a four goal advantage. Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) found Geary again cutting through the middle resulting in another BSU goal and created the largest advantage of the game.
With six minutes left in the Everding found her mark and put one in the back of the net. Rahilly found Pingree on the left perimeter who drove to the goal finished in the top right corner to cut the lead to three. A foul in the back third created a RWU fast break connecting Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.) to Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn.) and put the game to two goals.
Clancy answered once again giving BSU a three goal lead at the half.
Clancy continued her stellar play opening the second half with a goal set up by a RWU foul.
Rahilly continued her role as playmaker from behind the goal finding Pingree cutting hard through the center of the defense resulting in RWU's first goal of the half.
With two RWU penalties, RWU found a way to fly past the full strength of BSU's defense to add another tally. Continuing the scoring drive, a penalty from the back field allowed for Rahilly to find Everding and cut the lead to two goals.
BSU would score the next three goals with the first coming unassisted by Clancy, then Cachelin found Renauld on a pick and roll, and Clancy capitalized on another free position attempt.
RWU used a series of cutters with Rahilly finding the third option, Everding, cutting down the middle. In the next minute, Rahilly herself added another tally to RWU.
On a free position, Davenport found the back of the net to cut the lead to two with four minutes left in the game. Mackenzie Logan (Sussex, N.J.) reached over a BSU attacker and field a ground ball the developed into a RWU fast break that Pingree finished to bring the Hawks within one goal with less than three minutes left in the game.
Off a much-needed free position, Rahilly found Everding who was able to tie the game with 1:30 left in the game.
With the game tied at 14 all BSU earned the draw control and missed a shot wide that Caitlin Shanahan (Forest Hill, Md.) out hustled two attackers to earn the possession for the Hawks.
A successful clear got RWU back on attack and Rahilly changed roles form playmaker to game finisher with 7 seconds to play.
The Hawks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 22 at 6 p.m. in Keene N.H. to take on the Owls of Keene State and the Bears while head to Framingham State on Saturday, April 19 for 12 p.m. match up.
