WNE escapes Women's Lacrosse second half comeback efforts

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team dropped their third Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match to the Golden Bears of Western New England University who remain undefeated. WNE improves to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in the CCC while the Hawks slide to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the CCC.

dominated throughout the first half jumping out to a 10-2 lead by half.  WNE opened the game with a quick goal when Bethany Peters (Baiting Hollow, N.Y.) fed Shelby Trebbe (Wilbraham, Mass.) who spun and shot from the left side on the arc. Kaitlynn Stevens (Stratford, Conn.) followed up with a free position to put WNE up two at 25:53. Peters then went the length of the field clearing and scoring her second goal to put the contest at 3-0.

RWU answered when Kelsey Rahilly (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) came down the middle giving a quick pass to McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) who quickly flicked into the net to bring the score at 1-3 at 24:44

WNE Kelsey Sherman (Buchanan, N.Y.) fed Trebbbe at 22:20 for her second of the day and pushed the lead to three.  Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) found Stevens at 19:21 to put the score at 1-4.  At 17:53 Scialdone drove by her defender and finished to put the Golden Bears up by five.

RWU struck back at 17:31 when Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.) quickly fed Rahilly for the Hawks second score. 

WNE would score the next four goals; with the first coming at 16:38 by Trebbe, 10:35 by Brooke Kummick (Granby, Conn.)  Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) at 10:16, and Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bell, Pa.) at 8:44 to bring the score to 2-10 at the half.

RWU turned would resolve their offensive issue by converting more draw controls and out shooting the WNE in the second half.  RWU opened with the first four goals to cut the lead to four.

At 28:40 RWU's Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn.) found her mark on a pass from behind the goal from Rahilly. Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.) bulleted the ball past the goalie at 26:37 set up by a midfield turnover by WNE.  At 22:07 Kristen Pingree (Georgetown, Mass.) kept the Hawks momentum going scoring her first goal of the day.  Mackenzie Logan (Vernon, N.J.) scored the fourth unanswered goal at 21:53 to play to cut WNE's lead to four.

Kumnick scored again to give her the Golden Bears a comfortable lead of five with 19:51.
The Hawks would continue to rally and score two more goals set up by Rahilly at 19:17 she connected with Machette again and at 17:53 dished to Logan and cut the lead to three and bring the score to 8-11.

The teams continued to trade goals until 11:13 when RWU had a second spurt that turned into a three goal run that cut the lead to one, 12-13.

WNE managed to hold off the Hawks despite being down two players for close to 90 seconds, and Peters closed the game with a final goal at 1:13 left in the game, to bring the final score to 12-14.

Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, Mass.) had 13 saves in the win, while Kimberly Bolk (Jefferson Station, N.Y.) had 12 saves in their loss.

Western New England returns to action Tuesday, April 15th in Beverly, Mass. facing Endicott College at 4:00 p.m.  The Hawks travel to Wilton, Mass. on Saturday April 12th to take on Curry at
6:00 p.m.
