Wheaton surges in second half to win over Women’s Lacrosse

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Wheaton College handed The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team its first home loss of the season, as the Lyons earned an 11-8 win.

Roger Williams opened the game with four straight goals. Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.) connected on her sixth score of the year four minutes into the game, taking a pass from Deven Machette (Bethel, Conn.) to give RWU a 1-0 lead.

Then in the 15th minute, the Hawks caught a break on a misfortunate play for Wheaton. A gusty wind caught a pass by a Lyon defender. Her errant attempt to throw the ball landed directly into the ground and rolled into the net for a 2-0 RWU advantage. Later, Machette and Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.) added scores a minute apart to put the Hawks up 4-0 with 18:37 left in the half.

Ava Myette (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Ft.) ended the skid for the Lyons with goals to pull the team within two. Machette and McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) grabbed both the points back for the Hawks with back-to-back goals within 30 seconds of each other, yet Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine) and Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) notched two tallies late in the half before Hogan scored with two minutes left to make it a 7-4 game in favor of RWU.

In the second half, the Lyons came out firing, jumping out of the gate with four straight goals. Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn.) took a pass from Bush five minutes into the half to make it 5-7.

The Lyons' sixth goal of the game came rather unconventionally, as keeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass.) had the ball with an attempt to clear it. The middle of the field opened for her as she made her way down the field uncontested. She would be one-on-one with RWU goalie Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), but she dumped a short pass to her right to Bush, who scored to bring Wheaton within one.

Bush would later assist on the game-tying goal by Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass.) and the go-ahead score by Cohen with 15:48 left. Machette would tie the game at eight with 11:40 left, but three unanswered Lyon goals to close out the game pushed Wheaton towards the win.

Ananian had nine saves in the win for Wheaton, while Bolk made nine stops as well in the loss.

On Saturday, Roger Williams (2-3) opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play against Curry, while Wheaton (3-4) hosts Bridgewater State.
