Women’s Lacrosse nets second straight home win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team served up its second straight home victory Saturday afternoon, coming through with an 18-11 victory over visiting Keene State College.

The Hawks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, getting goals from Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn.) and Leah Osborne (New Fairfield, Conn.) within the first four minutes of the game. Keene State's Kaitlin Nolan (Mahopac, N.Y.) answered for the Owls with a goal at the 25:53 mark, yet the Hawks came right back with back-to-back scores from Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.).

Polly Grey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) brought Keene State within two with a goal less than a minute after Davenport's tally. However, the Hawks came back with three unanswered goals to take a 7-2 advantage.

Keene State refused to go down quietly, utilizing a 4-2 run late into the end of the first half to make it a 9-6 game with 3:24 left to play in the first half. Rahilly and Machette closed out the period for RWU, each scoring a goal to take a five-point advantage going into halftime (11-6).

Despite combining for 17 goals in the first half, the second half saw neither team reach the back of the net over the first ten minutes of the period. Machette picked up the first score of the half on a free position shot to make it 12-6 for the Hawks. Nolan and Tori Weinstock (Brookfield, Conn.) combined for three goals over a seven-minute stretch to come back within four.

Yet that would be as close as the Owls would come over the remainder of the game. Roger Williams scored five of the final seven goals in the contest, en route to the seven-point win.

Machette led RWU in scoring for the second straight game, scoring six goals with a pair of assists to give her 20 points in the Hawks' first two games of the year. Rahilly added six points on two goals and four assists, while Davenport, Osborne, and McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) each finished with three points (2 G, 1 A). Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) had 11 saves in the game in the win.

Nolan led Keene State with four goals on the day, while Weinstock, Grey, and Christa Demovellan (Westwood, Mass.) added two goals apiece. Jenna Bellano (Brookfield, Conn.) finished with a goal and an assist. Alison Argiro (Westfield, Mass.) made seven saves for Keene State in the loss.

Roger Williams (2-0) will fly down to Florida Sunday tomorrow and face Washington College on Monday. Keene State (1-1) will host Emerson College on Monday.
