Women’s Lacrosse suffer first CCC loss of the season

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England handed the Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team its first Commonwealth Coast Conference loss of the season, defeating RWU 18-13 at Golden Bear Stadium on Tuesday.

Senior Kaitlynn Stevens and junior Taylor Scialdone each scored six goals, and junior Brooke Kumnick added a game-best six assists (7 points), to power Western New England.

With its 12th consecutive win, the Golden Bears (12-1 overall) take over sole possession of first place in the CCC standings with a 6-0 mark. The Hawks fall to 8-4 on the season and 5-1 in the conference.

Deven Machette paced Roger Williams with team highs of five goals, seven points, four caused turnovers and five draw controls. Samantha Davenport, Kelsey Rahilly and Mackenzie Logan all had two goals and an assist. Kaelin Hogan also had three points on a goal and two helpers.

In the early going, the visiting Hawks controlled the tempo by scoring two of the game's first three goals. Machette took a feed from Davenport at the 28-minute mark for a 1-0 lead. After junior Tori Cirocco scored her 25th goal of the season on an assist from Kumnick just 16 seconds later to tie it 1-1, Rahilly put Roger Williams back in front with 26 minutes and 26 seconds later.

That, however, would be the last time the Hawks would hold the lead for the rest of the afternoon. Senior tri-captain Sarah Stevens scored, unassisted, at 25:42 showing on the clock to ignite a 5-0 run as part of a three-goal spurt in 46 seconds from sister, Kaitlynn, and Scialdone. The Golden Bears led 6-2.

Western New England senior tri-captain Jessica Scannapieco added a hat trick and three assists for six points and a game-best 11 draw controls. With 530 draw controls in her career, Scannapieco is one of just two current student-athletes in NCAA Division III history to eclipse the 500-plateau.
