Women’s Lacrosse pulls away early for win over UNE

Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team held off the University of New England, coming home with a 17-12 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) on Saturday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

Trailing by one in the early stages, Roger Williams University scored six times around one against UNE that held the rest of the way.

The Nor'easters (7-8, 4-3 CCC) struck first in 22 seconds and the teams traded the initial seven goals (4-3 UNE) before the Hawks (10-4, 6-1 CCC) took the lead for good.

Both attacking units had their way from the start, as a combined 13 goals (8-5 RWU) were netted in less than 10 minutes of play.

UNE pulled back within two (11-9) just before McKenna Everding notched her fifth goal of the opening period with 0:10 left to make the spread three at the break.

The margin was two again (13-11) after two in-a-row for Big Blue with a little more than 15 minutes to go, but RWU pocketed four of the last five to extend to the final difference.

After Everding, Deven Machette, Kelsey Rahilly, and Kaelin Hogan each scored three goals. Rahilly also registered five assists and Samantha Davenport contributed two. Machette and Mackenzie Logan had 10 and five draw controls, respectively, as the visitors established a 20-9 edge in the category. Kimberly Bolk made nine saves for the win in the Hawks cage.

The Nor'easters received five markers out of Hannah Warren, while Rachel Schwaner, Macki Hill, and Jessica Deedon added two apiece. Schwaner secured five draws for her side, Olivia Madore picked up a game-best five ground balls, and Jocelyn Davee had a match-high four caused turnovers.

Courtney Kendall and Lauryn Huck combined for eight saves for UNE, which concludes the regular-season on Wednesday (4 p.m.) at Gordon College (4-3 CCC). The winner of that contest will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming postseason championship.

Roger Williams, which has now locked up the No. 2 seed, will host Nichols College (2-5 CCC) at the same time.
