MIT mounts comeback over Women’s Lacrosse

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT erased a 5-0 deficit en route to a 14-10 victory over the Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team in a non-conference game on Saturday.

Senior Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn.) racked up four goals, two assists, 10 draw controls, and four groundballs for the Engineers (4-2). Freshman Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) generated two goals, three assists, and three draw controls for the Hawks (3-2).

Sophomore Carly Martin (Scituate, Mass.) and Stoeppel were a factor in the first four goals for Roger Williams as Martin connected on Stoeppel's pass to open the scoring at the 26:38 mark. Stoeppel found the back of the net four minutes later while Martin increased the Hawks' lead to 3-0 within the next minute. Stoeppel quickly followed with a free-position strike as junior McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) pushed the margin to 5-0 with 10:24 on the clock.

Battling strong midfield play and junior goalie Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) for the majority of the half, MIT ended the shutout courtesy of senior Kristyn Berretta's (San Diego, Calif.) free-position shot with 5:07 left. The Engineers then used solo efforts by Schott and junior Hannah Levy (Yardley, Pa.) to close the gap to 5-3 at halftime.

MIT carried the momentum into the second stanza as it tied the game after 38 seconds expired. Schott's free-position shot 14 seconds in was followed by a blast from freshman Cecilia McCormick (Islip, N.Y.). The Engineers then claimed the lead when Schott set up McCormick at the 27:30 mark. Roger Williams end its scoring drought shortly after the ensuing draw when the Martin-Stoeppel connection evened the score at six.

The Cardinal and Gray responded with five straight goals, establishing its largest margin (11-6) with 14:44 remaining. Despite the deficit, the Hawks continued to attack as they trimmed the lead to 12-9 courtesy of a Martin strike and back-to-back goals from Everding. MIT gained some breathing room from sophomore Katie Notarangelo's (Foxboro, Mass.) free-position goal with 10:15 left to play but Everding redirected a feed from freshman Abby Wollenberg (Farmington, Conn.) just over two minutes later. The visitors would not get any closer as Schott provided the final goal with 6:14 remaining in regulation.

McCormick finished with four goals as senior Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) tallied one goal, one assist, five draw controls, and three groundballs. Levy recorded one goal, one assist, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers while Notarangelo and Berretta both posted two goals. In net, sophomore Eva Boal (Princeton Junction, N.J.) notched one save and three groundballs.

Martin generated four goals and one assist as Everding registered four goals and four groundballs. Sophomore Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.) earned two assists and two caused turnovers while junior Elizabeth Cahn (Baltimore, Md.) collected four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Bolk amassed 13 saves and four groundballs for the Hawks.

Both teams are on the road for their next outings. MIT will travel to Sewanee – The University of the South on Tuesday, March 22 while Roger Williams will visit Wheaton College the following day.
