Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team took down host Gordon 11-5 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Tuesday. A late first-half run helped the Hawks break a deadlock and they held Gordon's offense in check in the second half to preserve the win.
Roger Williams'
McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored five goals and added an assist. The Hawks improve to 9-3 overall and stay atop the CCC standings at 5-0. Gordon dips to 3-8 and 2-2 respectively.
Roger Williams looked poised to add another strong win to their CCC resume with two quick goals out of the chute. Senior
Caitlin Murphy (Londonderry, N.H.) scored her ninth goal of the season on a feed from Everding. Everding, the Hawks' second leading scorer coming into the game, added a goal to her ledger just two minutes later with top point-getter
Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.0 finding her open teammate.
Gordon did not panic despite the early deficit, as Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) put the Scots on the scoreboard with a nice tap in from MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.). The Fighting Scots went 10 minutes between scores, but they were able to knot the game at two with a nifty over-the-shoulder shot from freshman Hannah Bourk (Barrington, R.I.).
The visiting Hawks called a timeout following the equalizer and came out of the huddle with a renewed focus. Roger Williams scored four times in the final 7:19 of the opening period.
Carly Martin (Scituate, Mass.) broke the tie at the 7:19 mark, an unassisted strike. Hogan scored a free-position goal over the shoulder of keeper Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) to make it a 4-2 game before Martin struck again on a feed from Hogan.
A late Gordon failed clear led to the sixth goal of the half for the Hawks as Everding notched her second goal of the game off the stick of Martin.
Roger Williams held a 14-10 advantage on shots in the first half, but both teams had nine attempts on frame. RWU goalkeeper
Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made seven saves over the first 30 minutes to keep the Hawks on top.
Gordon put the first goal in the net in the second half when Aston streaked down the middle of the Roger Williams defense and cut the lead down to 6-3.
The Hawks did not take long to counter with
Emily Stoeppel's (Brookfield, Conn.) first score of the contest on a free-position in the 35th minute. Their lead grew to five goals with Everding's third of the game with 17:37 to play in regulation.
Gordon would get one back with a finish by Castelline with just under 14 to go, but a three-goal run by the visitors essentially put the game out of reach. Everding scored twice more with Hogan turning in the other goal.
Senior Bailey Grinnell (S. Hamilton, Mass.) rounded out the game's scoring in the 57th minute on a free-position finish.
Bolk led both keepers with nine stops, while Kiernan came up with a solid eight-save performance.
Roger Williams took 12 of 18 draw controls with Stoeppel and Murphy leading the way with four apiece.
Gordon is off until Saturday when they take on the Seahawks at Salve Regina at 7:30 p.m. Roger Williams plays its final non-conference game of the year on Thursday when they host Bridgewater State at 7 p.m.
