Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team remained perfect in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 14-9 win over Western New England Wednesday afternoon.
Roger Williams began the day with a goal by
Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.) less than three minutes into the game. The Golden Bears came back four minutes later when Julia Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.) found Brooke Kunnick (Granby, Conn.) for her 36
th goal of the year to tie the game up.
The Hawks regained the lead with 19 minutes left in the first half on a goal by
McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.). Three minutes later, Hogan and Everding each scored again within 30 seconds of each other to force a Golden Bear timeout. The Hawks continued their scoring run with just under 12 minutes of play with a free position goal by
Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.).
Everding completed the first half hat trick with 10 minutes to play, making it a 6-1 Roger Williams advantage. Hogan scored again shortly after on a free position attempt, while
Marin Owens connected with Everding for a 8-1 lead.
Western New England ended the Hawk run with an unassisted goal by Winer with six minutes left in the first half, but Stoeppel ended the period with a free position goal for an eight-goal halftime lead.
The second half began with Hogan winning the draw, and running straight down the field and scoring her fourth goal of the game. Western New England came back in the following six minutes with back-to-back free position goals by Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) and Kunnick.
Ashley Brunner (Stratford, Conn.) helped bring Western New England closer with a goal of her own at the 20-minute mark. Roger Williams ended the Golden Bear run when
Caitlin Murphy (Londonderry, N.H.) found Hogan for her fifth goal of the day. Brunner answered with her second goal of the game for the Golden Bears, assisted by Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).
Both teams traded goals over the next three minutes before Brunner brought the Golden Bears within four. Western New England's Winer caused a turnover at the eleven-minute mark, which led to a goal by Taylor Scialdone, to make it a 9-12 Golden Bear deficit.
The Hawks earned a little breathing room when Stoeppel picked up an errant pass on a clear attempt, allowing her to score and bring the Hawk lead back up to four. The Hawks began to kill the clock, but Western New England gained possession with two and a half minutes left to try and make one last push. However, they failed a clear attempt, allowing Roger Williams to regain possession. Everding iced the game with a goal in the final minute.
Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made three saves in the win. Hogan and Everding each scored five goals with Stoeppel added three scores.
Shannon McFadden (Stratford, Conn.) had nine saves in the loss. Brunner finished with three goals while Scialdone and Kumnick each scored twice.
Roger Williams (7-3, 3-0 CCC) heads to Gordon on Tuesday, while WNE (8-3, 2-1 CCC) travels to Endicott.
