Women's Lacrosse falls in opening round of NCAA Tourney

Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon with a 13-7 loss to William Smith College in the First Round game played this afternoon on Gettysburg College's Clark Field.
 
The Herons are now 12-7 this season. Junior Alexandra Bird notched a season-high five goals in the win. It's William Smith lacrosse's first NCAA tournament victory since the Herons topped Salisbury 12-11 on May 11, 2003.
 
Senior Hannah Connolly (Immaculate Heart Central/Watertown, N.Y.) logged four goals and junior Allie Flaherty (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) produced three goals and won a game-high four draws. Junior Sarah Honan (Medfield/Medfield, Mass.) played all 60 minutes in goal. She shared a game-high with four ground balls, added three caused turnovers, and made seven saves. Senior Geneva Calder (Birchmount Park Collegiate/Toronto, Ontario), sophomore Melissa Moore (Noble Greenough/Dedham, Mass.) and first-year Laura Rollins (Northfield Mount Hermon/Dummerston, Vt.) each scooped up three ground balls.
 
Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn>) logged a team-high four points on three goals and an assist for Roger Williams. McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) added two goals and Carly Martin (Scituate, Mass.) and Emily Stoeppel (Brookline, Conn.) each added a goal and an assist. Paige Byrne (Clifton Park, N.Y.) shared a game-high four ground balls. Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) played the whole game in goal and made 11 saves. The Hawks, who were making their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament, finish their season with a 15-4 overall record.
 
The teams traded goals to start the game. Everding started the scoring 1:40 into the game. Connolly answered for William Smith off an assist from sophomore Ali Burns (Hingham/Hingham, Mass.). Carly Martin added a free position goal for the Hawks to give them a 2-1 advantage. The Herons then put together the next four goals to build a 5-2 lead. Connolly started the run after a pass from Moore with 21:39 on the clock. Bird then scored the next three goals for her third hat trick of the season. With 15:19 left in the half, Hogan's unassisted tally got Roger Williams within two, but William Smith closed out the half with another four-goal run. Flaherty started things off at 8:13. Connolly added a free position goal, before Flaherty fired home two more goals before the break.
 
Roger Williams came out scoring the first two goals of the second half, cutting their deficit to four at 9-5. Both goals came from Hogan. Bird notched her fourth of the afternoon to make it 10-5 for the Herons with 20:22 to go, and struck again with 15:31 to go with a free position tally. With 11:04 remaining, Connolly notched her fourth goal of the day to give William Smith a seven-goal advantage. It was a woman-up goal and senior Emy Stratton earned the assist. Just 20 seconds later, sophomore Kelsi Carr  (Culver Academies/Kitchener, Ontario) won the following draw and ran right to goal firing home her shot to make it 13-5. In the closing minutes, the Hawks added goals from Everding and Stoeppel for the final score.
 
William Smith finished with a 27-18 advantage in shots and a 24-17 lead in ground balls. The Herons also finished with a 15-8 lead in draws. William Smith was successful on 13-of-19 clear attempts, while the Hawks were successful on 11-of-19 clear attempts.
