Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team erased a four-goal second half deficit and forced overtime in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals, coming home with a 12-11 win over Western New England University.
The Hawks trailed by as many as four in the second half and by two with just over two minutes to play.
Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.) scored with 1:21 left in the game to bring RWU within one, then notched the game-tying score with 11 seconds left to send the game to the extra period.
In overtime, Western New England won the opening draw and came close to pulling off the upset a minute into the period. Julia Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.) fired a shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal but just sent it wide. The Hawks gained possession and brought the ball down the other end.
Carly Martin (Scituate, Mass.) would eventually find
McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) for the game winner two minutes into overtime.
For Everding, her game winner was her 74
th goal of the year, setting a new single-season school record for goals in a season and breaking the previous mark of 73 set by
Deven Machette '15 last season.
The Hawks weren't able to catch many breaks early on, as the team had two goals erased in the first five minutes of play by fouls called in the arc just before they could get the shot off. Western New England's Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) turned away shot after shot from the Hawks, helping hold RWU to only three first-half goals.
The Golden Bear offense was clicking in the second part of the opening period. WNE closed out the final 18 minutes of the half on a 5-1 run, turning a 1-2 deficit into a 6-3 halftime lead.
The Hawks came back with three goals in the first 13 minutes of play in the second half to pull within one before the Golden Bears responded with three unanswered scores for a 10-6 lead with 10:53 to play. The Hawks came back with a goal from Everding and two from Hogan to draw back within one.
Brooke Kumnick (Granby, Conn.) scored with 2:08 to play for Western New England, and appeared to have clinched the game for WNE before Hogan's heroics in the final two minutes.
Hogan finished with seven points on five goals and two assists. Everding added an assist and four goals, including the milestone 74
th. Martin chipped in with four points (1 G, 3 A), while
Caitlin Murphy (Londonderry, N.H.) and
Marin Owens (Somers, Conn.) each added a goal and an assist.
Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) finished with five saves in the game.
Kumnick led WNE with four goals and an assist, with Winer adding two goals and two assists. Ashley Brunner (Stratford, Conn.) finished with two goals and an assist. McFadden stopped 17 shots in the game.
On Saturday in the CCC Championship Game, Roger Williams (14-3) will host Endicott College, who earlier defeated the University of New England 14-10 in the other semifinal game. Western New England bows out of the tournament at 12-7.
