Women’s Lacrosse Begins Season With Win Over Emerson

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Despite five goals from both senior Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) and freshman Jenna Tomsky (Clinton, N.J.), the Emerson women's lacrosse team was bested, 12-11, by the visiting Roger Williams Hawks in its home opener at Rotch Field on Wednesday night in non-conference action.
 
Weber and Tomsky paced the Emerson offense with five goals apiece, while Weber and junior Megan Messuri (Stoneham, Mass.) each tallied an assist. Messuri also scooped up a team-best three ground balls.
 
McKenna Everding netted a team-best five goals for Roger Williams, while Ashley Warren recorded a pair of assists and Kaelin Hogan and Emily Stoeppel each picked up a pair of ground balls.
 
Junior goalie Krisitina Modica (East Moriches, N.Y.) recorded seven saves through 60:00 between the pipes in the loss.
 
Kimberly Bolk had one save in between the pipes for Roger Williams through 60:00 minutes.
 
Emerson had the 14-4 edge in draw controls, while they went 2 for 6 in free position shots.
 
Roger Williams held the advantage in shots (24-17) and ground balls (9-7) and were 1 of 2 on free position opportunities.
 
Just 2:41 into the start of the first half, Weber netted the first goal of the game to put Emerson on the board 1-0.
 
Nearly a minute later, a goal by Stoeppel squared the score at 1-all and kickstarted a string of five goals, including a pair from Marin Owens and Hogan, to push Roger Williams' lead to 6-1 with 18:19 left in the half.
 
The Lions found the back of the net for the first time since the 27:18 mark and began to cut away at the Hawks lead, starting off with a goal by Tomsky to put the score at 6-2.
 
After Roger Williams regained the four-point cushion at 7-3 on a net from Owens, junior Tara Windsor (Palm City, Fla.) and Weber tacked on the final two Emerson goals to close within a pair of the Hawks at 7-5.
 
Within the first six and a half minutes of the second half, Tomsky slipped the ball past Bolk twice to put the score in a 7-all lock.
 
A free position goal from Weber, her fourth goal of the game, gave Emerson its first lead at 8-7 with 21:14 on the clock, but Roger Williams responded on a goal by Everding to even the score at 8-all.
 
With the score squared 8-8, Weber tallied the go-ahead net at 16:30 to give Emerson the 9-8 edge before Everding evened the score once again at 9-all just 19 seconds later.
 
Tomsky deposited her fourth net of the game past Bolk to put the Lions in front 10-9 at 15:11 until Hogan responded with a pair of nets to put the Hawks in front 11-10 at 10:55.
 
The score was evened yet again on Tomsky's fifth goal with the game in a deadlock 11-11 tie with 5:40 to play in regulation.
 
Everding's fifth goal of the game at the 2:20 marker lifted Roger Williams in front 12-11 and sealed the win for the Hawks.
 
Emerson travels to Colorado for two games and starts off its trip with a contest against Colorado College on Tuesday, March 7 at 5:00 p.m.
 
Roger Williams heads back to Rhode Island for its home opener on Saturday, March 4 to host Keene State at 1:00 p.m.
