Women’s Lacrosse Tames Lyons With First-Half Surge

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team improved to 3-0 at home this season with a 17-9 victory over Wheaton College Tuesday evening in a non-conference showdown.

The Hawks powered their way to the win with 11 goals in the opening half. RWU scored three times in the first four minutes of the game and never looked back.

Carly Martin (Scituate, Mass.) connected with Marin Owens (Brookline, N.H.) and Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) for Roger Williams' first two scores of the evening. Martin then scored her first goal of the game off a pass from Stoeppel for a 3-0 Hawk lead.

Hannah Gasperoni (Hampton, N.H.) put the Lyons on the board with a free-position goal at the 25:37 mark, but the Hawks answered with six unanswered goals over the following 12 minutes for a 9-1 lead. Lilly Callahan (Wilbraham, Mass.) ended the Hawk run with a goal with 9:57 left before Owens and Stoeppel scored the last two of the half, putting Roger Williams up by a commanding 11-2 lead.

In the second half, the Lyons' offense began to pick up, sandwiching a pair of scores around a Shayne Rivard (Easton, Conn.) goal in the first four minutes. Yet the Hawks came roaring right back tallying four straight on the scoreboard for a 16-4 advantage, the team's largest of the game.

Wheaton finally managed to find its rhythm on offense, outscoring Roger Williams 5-1 in the final 13 minutes of the game. However, the 12-point deficit was too much to surpass, with RWU holding on for the win.

Stoeppel led the way with six goals and a pair of assists, while Martin scored nine points on three goals and six assists. Elizabeth Cahn (Baltimore, Md.) had three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made three saves in the win.

Molly Corvarrubias (Framingham, Mass.) notched five points (3 G, 2 A), while Gasperoni and Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine) scored two goals apiece. Galicia Rothe (Key Biscayne, Fla.) gave up eight goals with four saves in 39:18 of action.

Roger Williams (5-2) begins Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon at Endicott. Wheaton heads to Keene State next, also on Saturday.
