Women’s Lacrosse Handles Keene State In First Home Game

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team collected an 11-8 victory over Keene State College Sunday afternoon in the team's 2017 home opener.

The game was postponed for a day due to low temperatures expected in the teens. Though the weather was not as warm as expected, both teams braved the frigid temperatures and battled for 60 minutes of non-conference action.

Chelsea Lewis (Londonderry, N.H.) began things with a goal for the Owls five minutes into the game for a quick 1-0 lead. However, that would be all the Keene State offense could muster in the period, as the Owls were held to that lone goal the rest of the half.

Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) began a 5-0 run for Roger Williams with a score three minutes after Lewis' goal. Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.) would then notch four consecutive goals for the Hawks over the remainder of the half to put RWU up 5-1 going into halftime.

The second half saw the offense pick up for both teams, as the two squads combined for 13 scores. Kelly Chadnick (Brewster, N.Y.) scored for Keene State less than two minutes into the start of the half to bring the Owls within three. Stoeppel came back with a free position goal at the 27:59 mark for the Hawks before Chadnick and Lewis tallied back-to-back goals within a minute of one another to pull within two.

From there, the two teams would alternate scores over the remainder of the game, allowing the Hawk lead to hover between two and three. Keene State's Taylor Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) made it a 10-8 game in RWU's favor with 5:25 to play before Stoeppel put the game away at 1:20 with a tally from Hogan.

Hogan finished with eight points on four goals and four assists, while Stoeppel netted five points on four goals and one assist. Paige Byrne (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had a solid game for RWU with a goal, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made eight saves in the win.

Chadnick scored three times for the Owls with Lewis and Farland each adding two goals apiece. Tara Kilderry (Glen Head, N.Y.) finished with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Alison Argiro (Hingham, Mass.) stopped five shots in the loss.

Roger Williams (2-0) hosts MIT on Wednesday in the team's last game before their spring break trip to Florida. Keene State (0-2) heads to Wheaton on Friday.
