Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team improved to 3-0 on the young season with an 18-12 non-conference victory over MIT Wednesday afternoon.
The Hawks scored early and often in the opening half. The first period was a high-scoring affair with both teams combining for 20 goals in the first 30 minutes of play.
MIT's Cecilia McCormick (Islip, N.Y.) scored 23 seconds into the game with the Hawks playing one player down due to a card registered before the first draw. RWU would quickly net the goal back with
Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.) feeding
McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) less than 30 seconds on the ensuing draw.
Everding's goal kicked off a 4-0 Roger Williams run over the following six minutes of play. Katie Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) ended the Engineer drought with a goal at the 23:21 mark. Both teams would alternate goals, with Notarangelo responsible for each Engineer tally.
Marin Owens (Brookline, N.H.) would help spark another 4-0 run for the Hawks with a goal with 17:01 left in the first half. Roger Williams appeared to be running away with the game, but MIT made a late run in the end of the half, scoring three unanswered goals in the final eight minutes to pull within four at halftime (8-12).
The Hawks began the second half with back-to-back goals by
Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) and
Carly Martin (Scituate, Mass.) to build the lead back up to six. The Engineers came back with three straight scores in a four-minute span, two of which by Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, Calif.). MIT remained in the hunt, trailing 11-14 with 17:14 left.
However, another 4-0 run by Roger Williams over the next 12 minutes helped widen the gap for the Hawks, as they took a seven-goal lead with 5:25 left to play. MIT could only manage one more goal by the end of the game as RWU earned its third straight win.
Everding finished with six goals in the game, while Stoeppel had seven points on five goals and two assists.
Caitlin Shanahan (Forest Hill, Md.) added four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made seven saves in the win.
